I've been thinking about doing the NYIP thing. Not sure if it's worth it though. $1000.00 could be spent a lot of ways.

Now if it's worth it, i'll do it no problem. But I don't want to spend $1000.00 to get a repeat of books i've already bought. I have some of Adams books, Understanding Exposure, bunch of other art and photography books.

I've been involved in art since I was a kid, only seriously getting into photography this last year though.

So here is a link to some pictures of mine, borders might be a little messed because they weren't intended for the web, same with some of the colors.

So if you could look at the pictures, and tell me if you think I could improve with the NYIP course, or if it will be the basics over again, i'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!
-Josh

Thanks lostdoggy,

yeah I am hoping someone who has taken the course can give me some input....

I don't have tons of money... Just spent it on a 20D and 70-200L 2.8 IS. Would absolutely love some kind of program to learn more about photography... But only if it's really worth it.

I know $1000.00 isn't much compared to Brooks at almost 100K for tuition alone, and those weekend courses which can be $500-$1000 themselves. But, I have prior experience with other computer stuff claiming to teach great information, only to find out it's the same stuff you can get reading a few good books...

I hope someone can give some examples, or input on the course, cause like I said, I would love for it to be as good as they say, Because that would be great... But if not, I rather know before I regret it.

I took the NYIP course in 1983 ($600.00 then.) I liken it to grade school. I could not have done well in high school or my schooling beyond that without grade school.

IF you are good at reading something and understanding most of it, then a course like the NYIP course would, I believe, be beneficial to you. What you don't understand in it can most likely be explained by your teacher or by posting images here and asking for critique from knowledgable image makers. One problem with posting them here for critique is that the one critiquing may know even less about photography than you do!

When I first joined this site I tried to critique most of the portraits posted here. I attempted to offer good constructive critique, but my one posting that pointed out the flaws in the image were drowned out by the "great shot" or "couldn't be better" or "wish I could do that" postings of the rank beginners that know nothing about how to pose or light a person. So I've pretty much quit critiquing.

Just to show you I know what end of the camera to point at a subject, here is a recent senior gal I photographed.

Wow- $1000. I didn't know it was that much. You could probable take a similar course (or courses) at your local community college. Here in Ontario, we have continuing education courses that are offered in the evenings and on weekends. You could probably skip the "basic" level or intro course and take a more advanced class. Just a thought...

Nope no courses at any schools around here... I live in small town (Population 5000) the nearest community college is 20 miles away, and doesn't offer ANY photography of ANY kind...

Really sucks.

Thats why I was looking at NYIP as an option...

And I think it's less than $1000.00... With special "discounts" etc. I think it came out to $800.00.

Thanks for the comments so far though, and I agree about the critiques online... Ran into it a lot with digital art, a lot of people say it's great even when you know it can't be.

Don't quit, Benji. There are a lot of us here trying to learn, and we read through these posts to sift out the best advice. Give us more of the "Great shot, but..." stuff.

Personally, I feel you should take the course. You have the start of a vision. Forget that basic stuff, it's about confidence. You lack that, because you asked the question. Ok, take the course and build your knowledge and confidence. There are minor things that you will gain from the course and definately major ones too. Do it and rest assured that learning what you know or think you know is very rewarding. Good luck...don

I can see the Ansell Adams influence in the B and W keep it up.
