Just curious how folks handle white balance on at a wedding where light is changing all the time. I have seen the Expo Disc and the X-Rite Color Checker but using these means you are always pulling these things out when the light changes.

1. The Expo disc needs to be attached and a custom white balance stored in camera each time the light changes - time consuming

2. The X-rite someone needs someone to hold while you take a shot for post - time consuming

3. Set AWB and be done with it and mess with white balance in post - again lots of work after the fact

4. Set the White Balance to sunny, cloudy etc as you move about as the light changes - still some work after the fact

Thoughts on the best white balance workflow for weddings?

Why is the light changing?

Why is the light changing?

Just a few very real reasons which Color Balance changes...

  • Photo taken closer/farther from window light, changes relative intensity of ambient vs. flash
  • Photo taken closer/farther from artificial light in room, changes relative intensity of ambient vs. flash
  • Photo taken when light intensity from window light due to passing cloud, changing relative intensity of ambient vs. flash

OP, do not drive yourself nuts trying to achieve perfect color balance from shot to shot! If you get it perfect for the posed 'portrait' shots of bride in gown, then adjust by eye during postprocessing to be close to that reference during the rest of the time, the bride should be plenty happy (unless she is an anal compulsive textile designer in which case you were stupid to accept the wedding job)

    • DJ flashing random lights
    • sun setting at an outside wedding (as hinted at in the OP)

Specific problems call for different specific solutions.

Although, your comment about anal retentive textile designers really hits close to home.

    :D

Light changes from bright sun to shade to partial clouds to sudden overcast so it appears that it all needs to be done in post with AWB set for the entire wedding is what I am reading and that these tools mentioned are not worth it in a wedding situation?

For daylight I would shoot AWB and raw (always) then tweak certain shots that get out of sync with others shot at that time of day. AWB should get great results for the vast majority of the shots.

A grey card can help with rooms that might have mixed lighting, or events that are held in multiple rooms with different lighting. Even then, if you are bouncing from room to room just shoot and set the WB using the grey card reference in post with a batch process or copy/paste of settings.

For indoor and incandescent lighting and gelled to balance flash and ambient. I just used AWB and fine tuned later in post.
