I start pushing the A9 to it limit by using many different lenses in a challenge environment and the type of bird that i track (Falcon)

These are lenses that i currently own and tested with A9 in the last 4 months with both MB5 and MC11.

1. Canon 400DO mkii
2. Canon 500IS II
3. Canon 600IS ii
4. Canon 800IS
5. Sigma 500mm f/4 Art
6. Sigma 150-600 Sport
7. Sony 100-400G Master

MB5 and MC11 are the adapters OP mentions.

I'm a Canon shooter now, just as you were before. My concern is shooting BIF with the a9 plus either of the two lens adapters you mention. I'd prolly get the Sigma MC II. My idea is to get he a9, and eventually get the Sony G master 100-400 lens. In the mean time I wonder how well the a9 will do with my Canon 100-400 L II plus my other Canon lenses as far as focusing on and tracking many of the smaller birds that I like to shoot in flight?

My other thought is to go with the Sony RX10 mk IV. It seems to get great reviews plus it would be much less costly.

I'm very interested in hearing your opinion on this. Thank you.

Mike

Mike,

A9 adapter very well with big white such as 400DO ii, 400IS ii 500IS ii, 600IS ii, 800IS, sigma 150-600 Sport ( I owned all of these lenses and tested it out with the A9 in the last 6 months)

A9+ Canon 100-400L II is not that fast with either MC11 or MB5.
A9+ 100-400G master is the beast. IQ, speed is way way better than canon L lens.

RX10 mkiv sensor is too small. when you track BIF, the electronic zoom is not fast/smooth. When crop in, IQ is very bad.

Thank you very much for you very informative reply. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I'm going to take your advise on the RX10 mkiv.

I used the sigma mc -11 witht he 400 mm f2.8 It was fine for static sitauiaton and I couldmake it work for MLB for football no way. I alslo tried MB 1v and that was worse. Get native for fast action

plugs disconnected shooting with non-native lenses and adapters. As a working professional, I have to say I don't understand your logic. Until Sony releases native lenses that fit the job, I'd stick a 1DX II on the end of that Canon lens and call it a day.

new fw update enables all af modes on canon lenses

I just picked up an A9 and MC-11, and have only tested it for a short time with my EF 300mm 2.8 IS and the results seem promising. I have to keep the AF area in the middle area of the frame, but it seems to track and shoot at 10fps just as it should. More testing is needed to see how reliable it is (i was in good light for the couple of hours I tested it previously), but I'm happy with what I've seen so far. Assuming it works out well, then I'm ditching the rest of my Canon gear. I'm a happy A9 owner so far!

I've been adapting EOS lenses to the Sonys for quite a while....all the way back to the original A7r (horrible AF even with Sony lenses).
At this point, on the a9+MC11 with latest firmware on both, I consider the 400DOii 98% native
in AF/AF-C abilities.
My only problem now is that age is making even the 400DOii too heavy for me to enjoy. Yeah
I know, tripod/monopod....I just don't enjoy using them.

Here's one with the a9+400DOii

And as some here at POTN might know, I'm also using the Nikon D500+500PF for BIF'ing.
As soon as Commlite gets their adapter compatible (already the Nikkor 300PF + Sony a9 works a charm) with the 500PF
I'll ditch the D500.
