Camera travel question

Not exactly landscape but will be taking some landscape/nature photos. Leaving next week for Namibia for some vacation/photo safari stuff. Planning to take my 7D with a 17-55 and 100-400L. Question is, should I put my 50mm Mk II on instead of the body lens cap for travel? I was going to just take the body with the lens cap but got to thinking that the 50mm doesn't stick out much more and would give me one more lens to play with if I needed it? The camera and lenses will be in my carry-on back pack

Another tool in the toolbox is never a bad thing though the 17-55 pretty much does what the 50mm unless you need the extra 1.25 stops.

Yes, it certainly doesn't really give me any new coverage but I figured since it is not much bigger than the cap, I might as well leave it in place. Might be nice for some around the campfire shots

why not just mount the 17-55mm? It would not protrude out much.

have you considered the 40mm f/2,8 pancake?

I do not have a 40mm at this time. I was thinking of keeping the lenses off the camera to minimize the chance of damage as they and the camera will be riding in a carry-on backpack with some of my other gear to try to reduce the charges for overweight luggage. Carry on is limited to 7kg, over that and it is an additional charge.

With the 17-55mm, the 50mm is simply extra weight...do you really need f/1.8 vs. f/2.8 at 50mm?! The DOF difference at 20' is 4.4" vs. 7.0", hardly a major difference. Max lens speed can often be compensated by ISO.

The carry-on weight concern can be very valid, particularly on smaller aircraft used for flights within Africa (vs. international jet airliners).

Very good point. It doesn't add a whole lot to the kit. I will have to see how much additional weight it is.

Since you are using a regular backpack ("...the camera will be riding in a carry-on backpack), get yourself an insert similar to that shown at https://www.amazon.com …eeve-FB6028/dp/B007PUMCWC. If that one is too big, or you can go bigger poke around the web (check Adorama and B&H) as there are plenty of sizes out there. There are also some that have a tie off at the top or lid. See https://www.amazon.com …eeve-FB6028/dp/B007PUMCWC for an example. If you run into issues with pushing weight limits, just remove the insert, which becomes your carry on, and check the backpack.
