I am taking my DSLR on vacation in a couple of days, due to space constraints it will be traveling in my carry-on backpack with some other essentials. Does the memory card and battery need to be out of the camera in the carry on?

Thanks.

No, in fact if you carry a lithium ion battery outside of the camera, you need to put tape across the contacts so that a piece of metal cannot inadvertantly bridge the contacts, allowing the battery to get hot enough to cause a fire!...that is why batteries cannot be in checked luggage, where a fire might be unnoticed!

I have the small plastic cover for my extra battery. Is that OK to cover the contacts? Then I can put my second battery in the camera.

How about memory cards? Any issue with them?

Any insulator covering the contacts, to prevent inadvertant bridging of the contacts (shorting) is fine!

What he said... and no, there are no issues with SD cards. They can't do any damage to anything and they can't be damaged by anything (such as x-ray machines).

If you use different noname batteries you might have noticed that the plastic covers are not always interchangeable. Some sit a bit loose when used on a different brand of battery. To prevent them from falling off during transport I use small half-inch wide rubber rings cut from bicycle tubes. They hold much better than elastic bands and because they are wider, save you the rattle of plastic against plastic when you carry several batteries in a pouch or box that tosses around in your backpack while you are on the move..

My son recently visited MN from CA and said they require you to remove the lens from the camera now. So, I would install the body cap on and plan accordingly.

The TSA regulations depend upon where your are flying from, what airlines you are flying on and, most importantly what the Security Screening Person ate for breakfast and if he/she had a good night sleep.

As an example: Flying on Alaska Airlines from L.A. to Anchorage, they refused to let me carry my monopod aboard the flight because "It is a weaponlike insrument!"

Flying back from Anchorage to L.A. aboard the same airline a few days later, I saw several people carrying their monopods through the security screening. I asked if it was O.K. to carry a monopod aboard the flight... The answer was "Sure, people do it all the time-?" You guess!!!

TSA website gives the official answer, and whose opinion it ultimately depends upon (echoing what RPCrowe said!) "The final decision rests with..."

I just took a flight, they said to leave the lens on the camera

Given two different experiences, I guess it does depend somewhat on the mood of the screener.

Flying back recently into the US I was asked to remove my lens from the body when previously I hadn’t needed to. When I asked the TSA agent about it he explained that the x-ray sometimes reads super dense if you have other objects surrounding them. Asking for the camera and lens to be separated was allowing a clear sight line for the agent on the x-ray.

The way he explained it all made me think it was more how you pack your bag so next time I won’t bother removing them, just a clear line of sight from the top.

I fly very often and never had anyone check camera, lens, batteries etc and I get stopped for very thorough check every time due to my metal brace.
