I currently shoot a 5DIII and have an aging 50D as backup.

I've recently been playing with Magic Lantern crop_rec module and general ML RAW capabilities for video, as I've always wanted to have some sort of vlog or regular youtube thing with high quality content. Magic Lantern and video in general has expanded my view of photography immensely. I love the Post process on still images; video PP is like arriving in paradise. Plus I've been writing script notes for years now, so it's not a complete wind egg of an idea.

Since Magic Lantern opens up RAW video on my 5DIII, I have reason to dig in. I recently mentioned all of this to one of my peers who would benefit from video exposure, and plans are being made to give it a whirl. I like playing with Magic Lantern, but I am a little worried about reliability when other people's time becomes involved. I'd like to have at least 24-30fps 1080p raw with the option of 45-60fps for the cool stuff, and of course sound. I'm not interested the idea of managing separate sound gear every week for the sole purpose of making headroom for ML to operate reliably.

I'd love a 5DIV, I can accommodate the cost (although it's too bad I missed all the refurbish deals), but aside from what I perceive as reliable video in comparison to ML, I can certainly and happily make do with my 5DIII. Realistically, this video thing could last three weeks before everyone loses interest. Then I'd be stuck with this wonderful 5DIV and move the 5DIII to backup, since the 50D doesn't even really cover backup duty with it's intermittently working dials and bag full of batteries that last like 10 shots each.

Any thoughts, especially from regular 5DIV video users?

Don't know about your video stuff, but surprised about your BP511's not lasting. I run a 50D with ML installed, and use it for shooting airshows with a Sigma 150-600 C. I have a Canon grip fitted and with two batteries in it I can fill all of my 54GB of memory cards in a day. That ihas been just over 3000 shots in a day. for the lsat few shows. Just wish that stopping/starting shooting in the 50D's ML video mode was actually reliable with my body. Starting video recording more often than not locks up the camera when I try to stop recording. Otherwise I could be OK with the 50D video when I need something with a longer FL than my Galaxy Note 3 offers.

Oh and the two original BP511's that I got with my 300D way back in 2005 still hold charge OK.

Beware of MJPEG Jail, and files that are 5-10x larger than typical 4K footage from other cameras..... and that crop factor..... say goodbye to the full frame DOF and FOV.

They don't take a charge any longer. I drop a completely dead battery in the charger and the charger shows complete in a matter of minutes, but still dead when I put it in the camera.

BP511 batteries are so cheap compared to the newer Lithium ones, around $8 or so each in USD anyways. I would love to go back to those prices, but not so much to the 200 shots or so they were good for.
