It is a wasp and bee is the prey. It used to be quite rare but the population has increased massively since IIRC the late 80s. I photographed one a couple of years ago and the bee escaped (sorry for hijacking the thread).

To Lester great photos, if bees were not so difficult to ID you might be able to identify the prey from the photo.

Yes a Bee Wolf is a wasp (a wolf of bees) [Philanthus Triangulum], species name describes the abdominal pattern.

This magnificent wasp stocks its nest burrows exclusively with Honeybees, and this habit has led to it being known colloquially as the ‘Bee-Wolf’. [The burrows] .. have multiple chambers, each of which is provisioned with several bees. It is estimated that over 100 bees may be collected by a single female during the flight period,
