Have acquired this lens recently but have not been able to find anything on the web. This is a non L, IS and USM version I assume old as it has the noisy screw style focus. Has switch on side denoting LIMIT FULL. Also has 52mm filter thread. May buy a lens hood but unsure what will fit, already have rubber hood that screws into filter. Any opinions?

That is the oldest version of Canon’s EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens produced from 1990 until 2000. It is still a very sharp lens but has some minor draw backs.

As you have noticed the design of the AF motor is slow and noisy, and the front element extends as you focus, which makes the lens longer as you focus closer.

There is no lens hood or tripod collar designed to fit this lens. Using a screw in hood and mounting the tripod to the camera are simple ways to solve both those issues.

The Limit/Full switch is a focus limiting switch. In "Full" it will auto focus from the min focusing of 0.31m to infinity and in the "Limit" position it will focus from 0.57m to infinity. This way when you're not shooting macro, it will be quicker to achieve focus as it won't have to search through the entire focus range.

Thanks for reply. I do not take many macro photos so I have not tried the lens out as it was intended. I did use it at soccer match and was surprised that it gave quite reasonable results, day was very dark with no sun and many trees reducing the light to the playing pitch, F2.8 fastest lens I have at 100mm.
