I plan to shoot mostly people and automotive.

This is currently on sale for $349. Does anyone here have any experience and is it a good light for a beginner hobbyist(beginner in artificial lighting not photography)?

It doesn't offer TTL. Sounds like thats better in the long run for someone like me because it'll allow me to understand how to use these better.

At the same time I've never used one at all before so will getting a manual one be an issue?

They're good lights.

But honestly, if you can afford it, get TTL. You'll use it manually. You'll learn. But you can't add TTL later. You will eventually want TTL for a lot of moments when you can't lose time fooling with settings and light meters. TTL is just... so nice. Eventually you'll want the equipment to work for you, not the other way around.

Very best,

The need for TTL depends on usage. In some situations it is invaluable, in some practically useless.

If you are strictly indoor studio controlled environment, skip TTL. If run and gun with mixed lighting by all means get TTL.

Do you have a TTL speedlight?

I dont have one and Ive never used one which is why Im not sure how bad I need one.

Thats why Im worried about. I m afraid it might be a bit complicated for someone who never used one before.

Ill also be shooting outdoors btw

See, outdoor HSS + Strobing is your goal for portrait and stuff? You'll really want TTL real fast.

I think I read that.

Im more concerned about the technical side and being able to utilize the equipment properly.

Theres nothing worse for me than buying new expensive equipment and not being satisfied or finding it hard to use.

Honestly I do this for fun and the only portraits or people pictures I take are of my family but yea its outdoor, indoor or wherever I happen to be.

I probably wont be dragging this with me all the time when I go to take pics of the kid and wife. I can see this coming with me every time I go do an automotive photoshoot however.

Purchased the Rovelight 610 RT As I shoot canon I added the Phottix Laso trigger.......which will trigger the Rt610, my canon 430RTIII and will soon add a 600 RT I shoot fashion indoors and out and sometimes all I want is one 48" softbox with the 610 OR the 600 RT

cannot tell you how much I like the power and freedom of power packs! these will fire 300-400 flashes on a charge You say you want to shoot kids outdoors yeah, not only will you like TTL but man, HHS just rocks look at some of the great captures in this forum for 1 strobe set ups

this strobe also lead my education in using the ambient available much better as a rim or fill as an example look at some of the videos for the 26" westcott rapid box pretty dang kool!!!! Hey, just sayin...............PS I bought a second one.
