I went from a 60D to a 6D years ago and my 6D has been a great camera, perfect for my needs. My only complaint, which is a typical issue for the 6D, poor AF performance.

Recently, my truck was broken into and a lot of camera gear and other things were stolen so now I need to buy a new camera.

From reading many reviews and specs, I think the 6D mark 2 would be a great camera for me. I am a hobbyist and shoot anything from indoor low light to action shots at the soccer park.

My normal thought is just upgrade to the new model 6D since I liked my camera.... is there a reason I should think differently?
The new 5D IV is so much more than a 6Dii I'm not sure it will benefit me?
Or should I be looking at a crop sensor?

Please help me make up my mind?!?!

If you were happy with the 6D regarding handling, image quality and the sensor size, then the 6DII probably makes the most sense. If you are interested in stepping up to a 5D-type body but don't want to pay the price for the 5D4, there is always the 5D3. You still get a pretty good auto focus system.

Personally, I would miss the controls from the 5D-series if I stepped down to a 6D-series, but I am used to that type of body. I own a 5D3 and 7D2, and previously owned a 7D and 40D, which all have similar controls. Once you get used to a certain type of ergonomics it's not always easy to change.

Thanks... I didn't think about the layout and controls.

I'll probably just go with the 6D ii.

Replacing the 6D with a 6DII can be a good route if the following boxes can be checked:

  • The AF will be an incremental improvement over the 6D overall. Yes it’s the same array as the 80D, yes they are clustered, but also yes, better than the 6D.
  • The addition of the tilt/flip screen was a driver for my choice of the 6DII. It’s one of the things I really hope to see in the 7DIII. Is it worth having as part of a slightly higher incremental cost?
  • Don’t expect a smaller/cheaper 5Div.
  • A plus is the menu system/button layout will be familiar.
  • If you were not pushing the DR limits of the 6D at lower ISO’s, then the 6DII should be able to handle what you throw at it.

Yes, it’s closer to the 80D instead of 5Div in term of form and function, but if you are okay with what it is, it’s a very nice camera capable of very good results.

I am excited about the flip screen. I miss that from my 60D.
I'm sure the 6Dii will be more than fine. Now I'm debating what lenses to buy...

Thanks

I upgraded from a 6D to a 6D Mark II and am fully enjoying the sensor and touch/tilt screen upgrade while keeping the controls the same. I am not a video guy but this camera is tempting me into adding that skill to my repertoire. I kept the 6D as a back-up camera to compliment the newer version as well as my 80D.
As far as lenses, I have the Canon 70-200 f/4, Sigma 150-600 (got that one with my 80D but works really well with my full frame) and the 50 mm f/1.4. I also use the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 but only between 35 mm and 24 mm since the vignette it produces at 18 is too much. Still, if I am careful, it produces really nice pics.
Hope this helps a little.

Looking for light in all the right places.
