There were hundreds of these on our lake last summer. Not so many this year. Not sure why. Captured this one today.

Yes it is a very good lens. I’ve always wished they made a version in 500mm. :)

Nice shot Gene. Is that a local name for Eastern Amberwing?

Thanks for the comment, Keith. I got the name from a Dragonfly identification site. Quite a few pictures there and all called Amazing Flame Skimmer. Will have to look up Eastern Amberwing.

Looked it up and Flame Skimmer is Western North America species. I honestly can't tell them apart, but I am not well versed as you can tell.

Yes, I'm pretty sure. The Flame Skimmer has clear wing ends, and is about 2" long, and would not be East of the divide, so unless you were out there, it's very unlikely to be in SC. The Easter Amberwing male is the smallest of our N American dragons at about 1". The females have some patches on their wings, and is half again larger.

Thanks for the ID. This was in Tennessee.

I've become intrigued by Dragonflies and Damsel flies. The more I learn about them, the more interesting they become.
Learning to photograph them is another fascination. I am using my Canon 100-400 version 2, on a 7D MK II and am happy with the results so far. I have two extension tubes that I want to experiment with.
Surprising, at least to me, is that there is a huge variation in how tolerant the different types are. Some will tolerate me within inches, others need at least a few feet safe space.
I definitely need a good field book, and/or a good ID site.
Here is a what I think is a Seepage Dancer from yesterday, a very windy day.
