Hairy dragonfly male

Weja

Jan you take beautiful photos of these dragonflies (and other subjects)
I'm curious what marks a male cf a female?
I saw the end of the "tail" had a bit hanging below it in one but I think you said that was female.
Only thing I could see that was different apart from some colourations

Fabulous captures! Handheld? I was practising with damselflies today. Hoping to get them in flight someday!

Yes handheld.
Most of the time, i'll take my macro's handheld (90% of the time)
That way i am a lot more flexible to get thet perfect angle , so that everything will be sharp.

Difference in color is one thing.
At the end of the tail of the dragon , a male has those two pins at the end close together while a female has two pins with more space between them .

Thanks Jan for the explanation and illustration
These too are beautiful.
I'd love to have a diverse range of dragonflies here.
They're like hens teeth ߘ

Your pictures are absolutley fantastic. I find handheld easier/more flexible too, though I need to perfect getting that perfect angle right. A lot more practice ahead for me! I saw my first dragonfly yesterday, tried to get it in flight, when along comes my husband and gently waves it away!! :( On the brighter side, I got a few pics of a blue damselfly. :)

Welcome to the forum! Catching them in flight can be tough, but fun too. You will see a fair amount of flight shots if you scroll the pages. Hope to see some shots from you soon!
