Am I crazy for wanting the Elinchrom ELB 1200? I shoot portriat outdoor and want a lot of power to throw light far mainly to keep my light stand out of the the frame. I currently am using a flashpoint explor 600 and have considered the 600 wtt adaptor. Anyone using the ELB 1200 that can offer me there experience with using it. I’m wanting to invest in gear that will last the long haul

Ive got the previous generation Eli Ranger RX AS Speed. 1,100 ws. With the new Spyport I shoot it HS 2.8 1/8000 without a sweat.

Outdoors mostly and indoors. Love it. I am certain you’ll fall in love with it first use. Power range is amazing.

I Have a couple New ELBs on my gotta buy list now.

Here’s a previous post. Strobe was at least 30 feet away. Sun from behind her. Light in front. Modifier is the Eli Maxi-light (FireBall). Look for the Fireball thread here. It throws light anywhere you need.

What kind of portraits, if light is far you can only do hard light. I wouldn't mind ELM1200 but you can also gang two AD600s for 1200ws.

Portraits like the one posted above I like to mix portrait loose to show landscape hence the reason to want to throw light far to keep my lighting set-up out of the scene.

Is the firrball simular to the colt 45 that cheetah stand sells? I've been using that with the ad600 with good luck. Im hoping the elb1200 will throw light a touch further then the 600 when using a dbl difused softbox too.

Yes, it is similar. The Fireball is 16". Not sure how big the Colt is. The colt Seems smaller than that.

This is what I'd do.

Do you think shooting with a HS head would be better then using a action head when it comes to available power. I'm worried when shooting HS my throw will decrease. The specks don't really say anything about flash duration for the HS head. I understand that duration won't be much problem seeing shutter speed would then be your friend. Just having trouble deciding between the action head and HS head at this point.

If you go outdoors and want HS get the HS head. There is zero decrease in power. That’s other brands using HSS that the light suffers. Eli HS does not alter the strobe at all.

The shot I posted was f3.1 1/2000. At least 30 feet away.

Heres 1/5000. Ambient is nuked. Hummers don’t fly at night. The background was in the shadow of my home around 6:00pm here in Arizona.

With Eli HS, shutter speed is what alters ambient. It works. Freezing the wings of Hummers with shutter speed.

Ive used Elinchrom for 25 years at least. I have 7 Eli Strobes. Some 25 years old - all the pro models through the ELC line. Love them all.

They all still work. All reliable. None broke or needed any repairs. Love them all..!

Just for fun here’s from a 6 strobe shoot. 4:00am setup and started at 5:00am for a custom bike builder. Setup BTS shot is when I was packing up already. Almost forgot to take a scene shot.

That’s quite the incentive! Could it be inventory reduction because a TTL version is on the horizon?

I just checked, it is $3500 at B&H. Maybe they need to offer $1000 off.

Add the newly announced “dock” to power the ELB1200 in the studio and it’s a slick studio pack and head that can go from studio to rain forest without missing a beat.
