Im not an expert photographer and just do it as a hobby, but I would like to upgrade from my beginner camera of a T1i.
I don't want to spend an outrageous amount of money, but I would like to upgrade.
What would be the next step up from the T1i?
Thanks!

An iPhone? :-P Pretty much anything. What is your budget? You looking for new or used? The 77D is quite a nice camera and one of the cheapest new Canon's on the market right now.

Knowing your budget, and what it is you normally photograph would be helpful. The T1i is still a capable camera, within it's limits. What is it that the T1i isn't doing for you, that you feel a newer model would? What lenses do you have?

Three questions.
1. Budget, the all important question. There's a huge difference between whats available as an upgrade at $500 and $1500.
2. Are you looking to upgrade just the feature set so a newer version of the xxxD camera or looking to move to a pro-sumer version, the xxD line of cameras or even a full frame camera like the 5D/6D series?
3. As mentioned, where is your current camera lacking? It could be that instead of a body upgrade, a lens upgrade can provide more bang for the buck.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Your T1i is hardly a 'beginner' camera. The main still-picture difference between the T1i and my 80D is: better AF. 45 cross-points vs 1 cross/8 linear, 3fps vs 7fps, and the 80D will AF down to -3 EV. The 80D has way better high-ISO ability, but you didn't specify that as a need. For Video and/or Liveview, the 80D is a world apart.

I went from a T1i to a 6D and have no regrets.

What does the T1i not do that you want in your new camera? What lenses do you currently have?

Constructive criticism is always appreciated.

I honestly probably would say that there isn't really a "NEED" for me to upgrade.
Like I said its all a hobby.

My photography consists of photos for church activities, vacation pics, the random requests of friends/family to take pics for something.

Like I said its mainly a hobby.
I just know my T1i is old, prolly 7-8 years Id say.

I just figured it was time to upgrade to a newer camera.

I don't have great lenses, kit (18-55) that doesn't work AF anymore, sigma 10-24, Canon 50 1.8, Cannon 24-105

A friend just bought a new 80D and it is a really nice camera. You might consider looking at one, it would be a definite upgrade on most levels. Or just one of the newer Rebels

I went from a T1i to a 7D. I upgraded lenses from the kit lens but I wanted something more so a new 5D Mk IV arrives tomorrow.
The full frame sensor and L glass is the answer. You do have to be serious about the "hobby" to invest so much to move up the food chain.
Would you consider a used 7D and 28mm to 135mm kit lens for a reasonable price?

As said, ANYTHING is an upgrade. I'm not being a smartass, I still use my T2i.

You can update for very little money, all depends on what you want to spend.

I would ask you what are your limitations with the T1i? I have a T3i and it takes great pictures.. But for me, it couldn't focus or shoot fast enough for me. I upgraded to a 7D. It's the same sensor but in a different package - one that focuses better and shoots faster. That was upgrade enough for me. I also bought a 5D4 recently because neither the T3i or 7D were very good in low light. So that was the upgrade for that. Obviously, I focused (no pun intended) on the limitations I was trying to overcome. I looked at your flickr page and you do well with the T1i. What do you need to "upgrade" on the T1i? Focus? Color? Sensor? Water-resistance? Speed? Fit and finish? Then, as others have asked, what's your budget since you cannot buy a 1DX2 for a couple hundred dollars... If there is nothing in particular then budget is the only limiter...

Church and peoples pictures, Canon 50 1.8, Cannon 24-105. It is 6D call.
I might add it as well to T1i.
I have 500D since 2008 or so. Sold 5Dc and 5D MKII. Newer Rebels are kind of plasticy.
18-35 2.8 II L glass makes big difference for me. And 24 pancake. I also never hesitate to use it at ISO 3200 and up.
