another unknown to me
again wrong lens but it shows detail
It looks a bit like what we call March Fly here - but a bit early and not big enough, also not grey like ours
This is after about 80mm of constant rain, now hot and humid and suddenly the place is swarming with insects

Thanks Dennis
I'll have a look today as there's likely to be more out now the sun has arrived after more soaking rain.

I see there's a Tasmanian insect Facebook page but I'm not on Facebook!

Hello! That looks to be a "blow fly" (Calliphoridae). Known especially as carrion feeders, but like most any fly they will also visit flowers.

Thanks Mark
That sent me delving and I actually found an Australian insect site with flies included.
We have sheep blowflies as well here.
Interesting comment re flowers

Will look more at the samples offered

You've got some interesting and varied images on Flickr, very nice

It is a new year so I am working on a new diffuser set for the MT26EX RT macro twin flash. Luckily I found a foraging honeybee that I could use to test the diffusers. Not bad for a trial run, but I am still hacking them so for now I will not be giving out any details.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F13, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 1x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT, E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC. This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.

This is the second test shot that I took with a diffuser set that I am working on for the MT26EX RT macro twin flash. This time I managed to grab onto the stem of the flower with my non-camera hand to help keep it steady, so the details are better in this frame of a foraging honeybee.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F13, 1/80, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 1x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT, E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC. This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.

Cool, partly cloudy weather makes the perfect conditions to photograph small solitary bees. I found this Mining Bee foraging in a Dandelion.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order.

Cool temps and partly cloudy weather provided the perfect conditions to go looking for a dormant solitary bee. Not sure about the species, and unfortunately it took off before I could get a full body shot. Image taken in Bacoli, Italy in November of 2019.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to under 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held.

This European Blue Mason Bee is emerging from its cocoon. The female creates cells (usually in reeds or other hollow cavities), makes a pollen ball inside of a cell, and lays an egg on it and then closes that cell before making another one. When the egg hatches the larvae eats the pollen and spins a cocoon in about ten days, becomes a fully formed adult near the end of summer, "hibernates" through the winter and waits for the spring to emerge. The yellow bits stuck to its fur are left over pollen that it did not eat when it was a larvae.

Osmia Caerulescens, male.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to about 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering with -1/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.
