Leaf Cutter Bee with prey. Actually it looks more like a stem than a rolled up leaf.

I like both shots, but me thinks you should have turned them 180 in post. Maybe that's the way you shot it, but we don't know that and can't tell from looking at the photos...

Thank you, they are as shot, the second one is just a crop from another in the same series, you 'd prefer them facing down?
I've been experimenting with the diffusors after your tips. I like the light I'm getting but my rig is getting bulkier.

Would keep me from twisting my head when I look at them :)

If you need a hand with your rig start a thread in the macro talk section (get more eyes on it that way).

The way that these European Wool Carder Bees sleep in my Lavender is almost comical.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the stem of the Lavender with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

Not the greatest shot.. the sunlight was pretty harsh, but it was my first sighting of a cool species.

Rocky Mountain Clearwing (Hemaris thetis):

This is one of 4 species of hummingbird moths in the genus Hemaris that are native to North and South America.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
