(living in Italy) More info | Feb 26, 2020 02:23 | #761 The weather here in Naples, Italy has been unusually warm this year, so I thought it was good time to harvest my Mason Bee cocoons. Normally I'd harvest them in November and store them in my fridge, but my fridge is so humid that mold builds up on the cocoons. The "down side" to harvesting late is that some of them have attempted to emerge already. So as I'm unwrapping the paper tubes bees spill out onto the table. The upside is I can usually get a photo or two before they get active. I also hand release a lot of them without taking photos cause they need to eat. My Gallery

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x to about 3.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering with -1/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wow - these are beautiful photos of these lovely insects.

I had so many cocoons this year that I gave about three hundred to a coworker so he could populate his new Mason Bee house. My Gallery

But finding a composition that works at five times life size is tough, and I'm hitting the limits of what I can do in a single frame with the camera in my hand. My Gallery
