Almost macro, being at the limit of the range of the 150-600 and then cropped a little. This is more of an arty shot, being backlit - Buff Tailed Bumblebee.

But when it did it was facing away from me. So I carefully turned the flower so that the critter was facing the camera. Gotta be gentle, cause I didn't want to spook the bee into taking off and I didn't want to damage the flower. I managed to get the shot and leave the both the critter and the Sourgrass unharmed. There's no black band through the grey hairs on the thorax and it has more conspicuous hairs on the tergites. There have been records in Hants since 2010 as well, so v. likely I reckon. Thanks for your feedback John, it was moderately tentative, I'll go back to the field guide and recheck. To be honest not the best angle but I could not any higher up the sandy ravine they had the nests in. My Photography Home Page

johnfosteruk Goldmember More info | Jun 02, 2020 13:30 | #893 I was photographing Blue Mason Bees which were cutting up pieces of Pansy leaves to make mastic for nest plugs. The one that got away Part 1 She struggled, getting caught in more strandsIMAGE LINK: https://www.flickr.com …651/in/dateposted-public/ The one that got away Part 2 IMAGE LINK: https://www.flickr.com …447/in/dateposted-public/ The one that got away Part 3 She relaxed a little, but was still trapped, as her hunter came to collect some dinner. She must have been holding onto the nest material as you can see it mid air here. IMAGE LINK: https://www.flickr.com …483/in/dateposted-public/ The one that got away Part 4 She got dragged back over the apex of the roof to the other side IMAGE LINK: https://www.flickr.com …841/in/dateposted-public/ The one that got away Part 5 Where this image shows the extent of her predicament IMAGE LINK: https://www.flickr.com …976/in/dateposted-public/ The one that got away Part 6 Then somehow, against all odds, she managed to wriggle her way free and fly away to live another day. This image (for which I didn't nail focus, but it's the best I have) shows her just moments away from freedom. By the time the camera exposed for another shot, she was gone. johnfosteruk Goldmember More info | Jun 02, 2020 15:23 | #899 Thanks, it's my fave from that set too - I wanted to capture this exact shot showing the face & those big strong mandibles, with the antennae in focus too. There were multiple females going backwards and forwards but I struggled all afternoon to get the shot as it was really difficult to position myself, the camera and the diffuser, whilst holding steady and not disturbing the leaves so I kept scaring them off. I got there in the end tho, perseverance paid off!
