She lives in the mountains above Itri, Italy so I got there at 5:30 in the morning hoping I could photograph them before they got active. Unfortunately it was 20C (68F) and they were pretty much hyperactive. I found a few that were having a tough time getting their metabolism going but they didn't give me much time to shoot. Due to the pandemic I wasn't able to go to her place earlier in the year. My Gallery

I took it in the field in an area where there was no significant natural light in the background and nothing behind the critter to reflect the light from the flash. Had to get a shot though cause I rarely see them. Another heat of the day photo of a critter that was more hungry than afraid. My Gallery

nardes Goldmember More info | Jul 05, 2020 18:26 | #1030 The Paper Wasps were in a somewhat awkward position within the shrub this morning, so I couldn't get a clean set of frames for a decent stack. Taken with Helicon FB Tube, 24 frames and stacked in Helicon Focus.

When I looked through the view finder I realized that it was blowing a bubble, and every other second or so it would stick its proboscis out. I've been told that they can blow bubbles as a way to cool off, but it wasn't hot on the day I took this shot and the critter was in the shade. Still interesting that they can exchange heat that way. It might have been trying to concentrate the nectar that it collected as well. My Gallery
