Went out looking for bees today, but it was a bit blustery so the flowers were gyrating like whirling dervishes. However, the 5D Mk IV AF did a good job on those it managed to lock onto.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

Excellent shots Dennis!

Hi. Is it okay to ask how you set that up with the 1-5x and maintained the light, etc. I'm still in the focus rail stage with my 2.5-5x and looking to learn better ways to shoot it and max out what it can do.

If you get hardcore enough about it you can order beneficial insects and keep them in an aquarium until spring and release them. it's literally a captive audience. Now's the time to find cocoons too and aquariums are great for keeping them. I have fish aquarium shooting on my list of things to do but haven't gotten around to it. Is there a aquarium fish area on here?

I take all my shots with the 65mm hand held with a MT24 Macro Flash. I have not gone above 2x magnification - to be honest the vast majority of my shots have been 1 x magnification. I have the greater magnification to look forward to and I expect it will come with a learning curve and may need a tripod to be involved.

Sounds to me like you need to set up a small, table top studio this winter & do some focus stacking. ;-)a

I think you are right as I bought a focusing rail and still have not even tried it once so it would be a perfect time to get acquainted with it.

We found a flowering shrub at the Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane that the bees seemed to like.:-)

Taken with the EOS R6.

Cheers

Dennis

I got a Micro Nikon 60MM 2.8 G yesterday I was so inspired by the results of what you shoot. I'll have a ttl ring flash here tomorrow. It was too windy to shoot anything close handheld outside today so I shot the 60mm today tethered . I'll be posting stuff from it later.

Compared to my Canon 100mm F2.8L Macro lens, I had previously found the Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro lens to be very slow at auto-focusing for insects in flight, relegating it to tripod mounted shooting only.

However, when I fitted it to my Canon EOS R6 and gave it a trial run in the back garden this morning, it seemed to AF a bit faster and more reliably, so there may well some life left in the old dog yet.:-)

Taken hand held, with the Canon EOS R6 using the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter.

Cheers

Dennis

That's a beauty, Dennis. Here on the top half, the mini-critters are disappearing fast, so those from Oz and others on the south half will have to keep the thread going. :-)

Australian Native Stingless Bee taken at the Roma Street Parklands over the weekend.

They are quite small, about 4 mm long.

Canon EOS R6 with Canon Extender x1.4 Mk III.

Cheers

Dennis
