So I’m on vacation and discovered that the B-29 Fifi was in my area: I went today to get som pictures and the ground photos are fine, but the air shots are unusable, way over exposed.

I do not normally do airplanes so would really appreciate some suggestions.

I will have one more chance tomorrow morning, weather should be sunny with cloudy periods, take off probably from the sun passing in front of mr. landing will probably see 1pass overhead sun on my right on the nose of the aircraft:

I would really like to get realistic prop blur, but also good exposure on the airplane.

my gear is a 5D MKIII with the 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII and the MKIiI doubler.

Any and all help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

For good prop blur, the slower the shutter, the more the blur. As to the exposure, I'm assuming you are on the ground so expose for the sky. It's hard to say what settings as there are so many variables, but take a few test pics and look at the histogram. I prefer to set it to M and dial in the parameters and let it stay there.

Here is Fifi ISO 100, 1/125th, and 1/160th f/8 on a slightly hazy but bright day. I wish I would have slowed the shutter down a bit more but it's hard to handhold the 150-600 siggy and still get a sharp image.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

What exposure mode are you using? Normally in one of the auto modes, I would expect the sky to be "properly" exposed & the aircraft to be dark.

99% of the time I use manual NOT including Auto ISO, & suggest that you read this:
Need an exposure crutch?

FrankC - 20D, RAW, Manual everything...
Classic Carz, Racing, Air Show, Flowers.
Find the light... A few Car Lighting Tips, and MOVE YOUR FEET!
Have you thought about making your own book? // Need an exposure crutch?
New Image Size Limits: Image must not exceed 1600 pixels on any side.

I got there late today and just jumped out of the car and shot. I also shoot manual but the iso was pretty high and i did not notice before shooting. i would like to preset as much as possible just to be in the ball park before starting.

Ok, got back to the airport and managed to get some photos that I think are ok, but that’s from the camera review. Have to wait until I’m back home to download. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
