Hey folks!

So I recently shot a wedding and they asked if I could do an album as well? I've been looking online and found suppliers, but i'm not sure how to go about designing it. I know there are a few programs out there, but I don't think they are worth the investment as it's only a one time thing.

Is it possible to design the pages in InDesign or Photoshop? Would I have to output each page individually to the printer, or save the entire book as a PDF?

Lightroom has templates built in, and you can download templates for PhotoShop. I'm sure there are some other templates too. Arcsoft used to bundle some with the software it gave away with many manufacturers of point n shoot cameras which was quite good, though you went through the software to download from it's wbsite, and the best were ones to purchase, which looked excellent, though I only ever used the free ones.

Black river imaging has a free design program that's easy to use called "Cascade". Their albums are also quite nice.

Graphistudio has a software that you can use. Fundy is a program for sale but you can use it free for 30 days. I've designed them myself but usually tend to pay the album printer to design it for me.

So, I used InDesign for the layout, and all was going well until I output the PDF. Now I’ve got this. It looks like the photos are copied onto the next page.

I’m designing for a ZookBinder Zook Book with a seamless design.

Got it figured out. Here's the album preview.

What can I do next time to make it better? All pages were designed by hand in InDesign. Sorta made my own templates.

A few thoughts:

  • I rarely mix B&W and color on a spread.
  • Don't forget full bleed - 4/5 might lose the top of her head
  • 6/7 top left looks a lot like the 4/5 photo
  • 8/9 remember the gutter can sometimes lose part of the image. Also bottom left image you can process to bring the faces / people out more
  • 12/13 looks really low contrast. Are you doing some weird processing.
  • 18/19 bottom right is overexposed
  • 20/21 mix of some images too bright some too dark - just a bit
  • 23/23 R I think would be nicer with different processing. Bring the people up a bit, I like more contrast. Again the B&W / color mix.

Most of those comments apply throughout. If it's your first album you're doing ok, my first was pretty terrible.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

Yes, this was my first album so I appreciate the advice. TBH I’m still looking for “my” style of editing, but not there yet. Lightroom and Photoshop are my Achlies heel.

We use PhotoFusion (Extreme version) by LumaPix.
We've been using it for over 5 years after trying lots of other programs including Graphistudio's Yervant templates, Photoshop by itself, etc.
It works well, is very well documented, and very stable. It does all the techniques we need. It's made for page layouts and is well supported online, by tutorials, and via phone/e-mail.

Just want to add that if you're shooting weddings regularly, investing in a album design software might be worth it. You'll be amazed how many couples order them once you start selling them in your pitch. Often time, one extra album would cover the cost for the software.
