This weekend I had to document 3 days of pure VW bliss. I was the official photographer for the Great Canadian VW show in Vancouver, BC.

I had 3 bodies on me. I put the Fuji away as I didn't feel I could pull of photos in low light.

I will have to say I feel the 5dmk4 just had this amazing confidence in banging off the shots in low light.

This photo isn't perfect but the situation was far from ideal. ISO 20,000 still pulled out details and will still look "good enough" in large print too. I'm quite pleased with my Canon

Also had my Sony A73 with 16-35 f/2.8MK2. So close in buying a 16-35 f/2.8MK3 before this weekend but decided to use that $$ for other things......

The Silver Beetle was only running 11.0's as there were some electrical issues that day.

Seemed I was eating my A73 battery and luckily i had an OEM spare. I must be chimping too much even though I'm using a mirrorless EVF :)

After shooting 3 days I honestly couldn't complain about the weight. In the low light I couldn't pull my Fuji X-t2 out with 50-140mm f/2.8 to save weight.

I was so impressed with my 5dmk4 and A73 combo this weekend!

Just curious of 1/400 for the first shot. You can do 70-200mm at 1/60 easily at much lower ISO. Would have loved if you tried your Fuji just for heck of it.

Bobby I'll admit I'm not an expert in documenting 1/4 mile drag racing. I've been extremely rusty as I haven't done it in years.

Not many people are silly enough to shoot at the distance with f/2.8 I suppose. There was alot going on as there was a big VW event gathering in the park.

I really was tempted to shoot the Fuji but I just felt that I only had 1 opportunity to take photos of this big event. Perhaps if it was a "not so critical" pressure in getting the photos I could shoot a test and tune "non event".

ISO 20,000 was usable and I tried to squeeze out some faster shutter speeds for the launch. I just ended up shooting just before the launch.

3 full days of water and aircooled VW's and I had 12hrs sleep in 3 days. During the event I was editing furiously too so I was putting a lot of pressure on myself :P

I had opportunities to shoot easy non challenging images too with the Canon :) This was featured show car a while back.

Bus was taken with the A73 with the use of pivoting LCD. Dynamic range is so useful too!! Shot was taken near the waterbox. I gotta sign a waiver ;)

Man you just need to trust those Fuji cameras and control your settings, the high ISO is grand on them. I have a couple of shots from the last wedding as 12800ISO (taken by my second) and could easily push them up a stop to 25600ISO without causing any big loss in quality. Fuji use an ISO irrelevant sensor so shooting up in the range is not as big a problem as some other brands with a dragon in their history. Sure low ISO is cleaner but for those kind of shots a little noise makes no odds at all. It's not like you are going to be printing them two meters wide and hanging them a gallery for people to inspect up close.

I know this is 'only' 8000ISO but it's pushed 1/2 a stop in post too. It's the only shot I have to hand at a highish ISO tonight having dumped most of the smart preview yesterday.

Butter Bokeh from the 90/2 even at f/5

Hey Kim,

That's the thing....I've tried using Fuji for some types of photos and have been disappointed in the Raw file falling apart in low light. Mind you I'm saying the Fuji can work for me but my particular "picky" self knows the Sony or 5dmk4 can do better in low light.

Even some of the photos I took with the 5dmk4 was "ok" due to the circumstances. The problem was I was doing my typical running around. There was some people shooting in one spot getting the same exact "boring" angles which I do not want. The penalty for that is I cannot spend luxurious time sitting in one spot for a long duration of time with a tripod. Problem was I was losing light and the cyclical rotation of grouped cars rotated from Outlaw class, sport bikes, sport compact then the VW group cars. Too many cars to document.

After using the Canon and Sony combo last weekend I was quite impressed of the render of cars with the Sony. Real to life images that is unlike the artistic render of Fuji in some cases. Some cases the Fuji image is not that different than sony but the Sony never has that canvas cartoon look. Canon is also guilty of looking cartoonish in small aperture bright sunny days if you uplift shadows. Fuji is even more cartoonish in some lighting if you uplift shadows shooting small apertures.

I had my Fuji with 56 f1.2 and 50-140mm and it almost never saw the light in the entire weekend. I really should have shot it more in the good light. I was analyzing the responsive shutter between the 5d3 with 70-200 and it still feels more responsive than my x-t2 with 50-140mm.

I juggled with my 5d3/5d4 and Sony all weekend. I used the 5d3 during the daytime photos and it worked perfectly with zero complaints. I even feel the mirrored canon's snapped every photo instantly. The sony even with the dedicated E mount sigma 24mm ART had some piggish slow AF but that's the sigma crappy AF motor !!!! My adapted Canon 24Lmk2 on my Sony A7iii is substantially more faster as if it's on a native Canon body.

After I've been using the A7iii with sigma 24mm ART f/1.4 I have not touched my Fuji X-t2 with 16mm f/1.4 in a while. I've been floored in how clean the images are in silly challenging low light. The Fuji RAW file still falls apart much sooner than the Sony in low light. This is one reason why I bought the sony for fun and experimentation. When I am in an great light environment I happily use the Fuji.

Fuji still has that "calm" processed look that is easy eye candy to produce. Sony images generally looks real to life and not easy to make every image like processed eye candy "look". The render is quite distinctly different.

That VW bus image at the track would not have look like that if I shot with Fuji. Fuji at f/7.1 would have looked more animated cartoonish if I uplifted the shadows. I've noticed a difference in Sony files and Fuji files when it comes to cars in certain types of lighting. I'll try documenting some more cars during a Carbs and Coffee coverage I'll be doing before summers end.

More experimenting :)
