i just got a sandisk extreme pro 16gb for testing and after a few clicks it said memory error format card and re-insert.

Bye bye Sandisk i have heard enough horror stories about their cards could be a fake as well.

Maybe you didn't give it a chance? You should always format the card in the camera, especially a new one. And you should not delete the images on the card in a computer, either.

Fakes usually are big brand names = fakes. And you can not blame that on the brand....
Rule of thumb: If it too cheap to be true then it probably is a fake. And it is worth buying from a place that accepts returns without hassle.

This is why I don't buy storage devices from eBay or 3rd party Amazon sellers. Although now I've heard that amazon mixes inventory from third parties and amazon themselves so maybe I'll just stick to adorama or b&h next time.

Sandisk and other brands are very dependable. I have only very rarely had a glitch with one in more than 10 years of use. One problem happened when we were changing cards out quickly (me and a guy were doing some rapid testing)... there was a read error, but all returned to normal soon with that card.

My philosophy is to NEVER take the card out with the camera turned on, never edit or delete anything in the camera (should actually be OK but I never do it), format in the camera before use, and use a card in one camera only, never swap to another camera.

Same here. Since getting one Lexar card from Amazon (not 3rd party) a while back that was having issues being even recognized by one of my cameras so I returned it. I’ve gone the same route as you now and buy only from one of the few places I trust. Usually B&H or Adorama. I never ever buy them from eBay or random online shops... just too many scams out there for something I have to depend on. Same for batteries, only OEM or reputable 3rd party (usually Wasabi).

The only exception I have with this is if you own a camera that can save profiles to the card. I swapped to using the “erase” instead of “format” function after wiping the saved profiles on my card several times back when I shot with the 1D-series. I actually kept a separate old SD card in my bag with saved profiles on it if I forgot and wiped them after that. Now my Sony A7iii can save profiles to the card as well, but I haven’t tested if it’s smart enough to not wipe the saved settings yet... I doubt it.

Best Buy is also a good source, but may be slightly higher in price than B&H or Adorama. At the corporate level, they source the cards direct from the importer (Ex:Sandisk) and then move them down to the retail stores. There isn't any middleman involved.

I was out taking sunflower pictures one day and had another 'pro' photographer that was trying out a 6D that she had been given.

She wasn't happy with the camera and handed it to me to check out. The camera seemed to be in almost continuous 'read' mode with the red light coming on every single time I touched any button.

I was really puzzled.

Then light bulb went on and I asked her what sd card had she put in the camera, was it one from her olympus? and the answer is yes. "Did you format it in the 6D?" "No." she said.

Do you have pictures you need on that card? ... Yes....... (face palm on my part now)

So while I have switched cards back and forth between my canon cameras and not paid too much penalty, I can't even imagine how many times a camera has been blamed when a lay person plops a sd card from another BRAND and doesn't like how the new camera works.

But I live in the IT world and it would have never occurred to me NOT to format the card in the camera it's going to be shot in.

smh.

As to the storage question, I have a mix of larger and smaller, and it depends on the job which i use. :)

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I prefer large (64-128gb) cards, but also to have a body with 2 slots. If that's not possible I'd still opt for large cards, but I wouldn't skimp (I've had budget cards fail several times) and would just buy the reputable stuff like Sandisk.

I do it a bit different.

Main card in slot 1 = 256gb
second card in slot 2 = 64gb

as the second card fills up I switch the second card out. I write same file to both cards.

Wow. That 256 GB card is 8,000 times bigger than my first hard drive.

If you fill that big card often, you must buy a lot of hard drives. :-)

I just maxed out my 2nd 5TB. Looking at building a 8 bay nas now.

I only bought it for recording 4K on the 5D4. It would only hold 2 hours if memory serves me right.

The stories could be true but remember you have a great amount of control over purchasing fake or genuine cards by carefully choosing your source. I personally buy from Best Buy and on occasion Adorama or B&H. Why? In the case of Best Buy I have been told by my neighbor, a BB manager, that all memory cards are purchased at the corporate level and directly from the importer. This could be thousands of cards at one time and then they are disseminated down to the local level. There is no middleman. I would imagine that Adorama and B&H also buy in quantities that enable them to deal directly with the importer. The last place to buy memory cards, IMO, is eBay. The 2nd to the last place, again IMO, is Amazon (unless you know what you are doing).

By the way, after you had an issue with the Sandisk, did you return it under terms of the warranty?
