I recently sold a canon 50L 1.2 on the Facebook marketplace. I shipped next day priority and insured it for the full amount $850. She received the lens and messages me and says it won't focus. Then says sometimes it focuses. Then says she got it to work but it sounds like it's not going to focus right. I explain to her that at 1.2 it is very hard to lock focus especially if it is in a dark room and ask if she has the af clicked on. She says I know how to use a camera. She asked for a refund immediately and I told her I'm not willing to loose $50 ($25 PayPal fee + $25 shipping/insurance) because she feels the lens doesn't focus right. And told her she said she got it to work. So she files a Paypal claim. PayPal holds $850 in my Checking account and it's been pending review for 2 days. I sent PayPal pictures of our whole conversation and tracking number. After checking my original fs post i never stated once that the lens even worked and she never asked. This is total buyers remorse and I hope PayPal doesn't allow her to take advantage of me. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks-Jason

Not all transactions end well for either the buyer or seller and it is quite possible something happened during shipment.

Tell her to return the lens and you'll refund her money as you're not going to win the PayPal claim. I'm fairly certain you recover most if not all of your PayPal fee if you refund from the original purchase.

Why wouldn't i win the dispute if I have proof of her saying she got it to work?

You aren't going to win this, paypal won't side with the seller. Tell her to ship the lens back and once you get it back, refund everything but the original shipping. If she still tries a claim on that, then try to fight that amount, but at least you get the lens back. It sounds like you don't have alot of experience in selling and using paypal for payment, but this will be a tough lesson I am afraid.

I've actually sold alot and purchased alot with PayPal. This transaction was over Facebook not EBay. Also I have proof of the buyer saying it works and she thinks it might not work. I've heard in some cases PayPal will make her take the lens to a shop to get proof of malfunction

Well then try it out. t I have sold over thousands of things on Amazon, FredMiranda, potn, ebay, ecrater, Facebook, etc, but you always end up with these buyers at some point. In the end if a person wants to return something, it is better to manage that return than to be out money and goods. Good luck, I hope you win. :)

Did you mention that the lens didn't work in your original Facebook post?

That isn't what that statement says? The lack of mentioning that AF works isn't the same as saying the AF doesn't work.

if you are going to sell a lens for $850 you better not hide behind the I never said it worked. It better darn work and shame on you for trying to weasel out of this. Get the lens back and test it. if it doesn't work right then file a claim with USPS or UPS or whomever. Also doesn't matter where you sold the lens, Paypal is Paypal and all buyers have protection against stuff not received as described.

I'm not trying to hide behind it. As I said I noticed in the original post. I say it was on Facebook because I know EBay has an added layer of protection for buyers. I'm not trying to screw anyone. The person doesn't know how to use the lens and now I have a Paypal dispute. Doesn't seem right. I never realized how screwed up PayPal and buyers can be. And if it somehow has an issue once you mail it back the original insurance is voided.

annnnd this is exactly why I only sell things in person, locally, cash in hand and then hand over the item.
I am 100 % transparent about condition function as it applies to a particular item and give the buyer time to test to their satisfaction. people seem to like to treat these kind of transactions like they bought from walmart/bestbuy/whatever retailer. blows my mind.

Unfortunately we only have your word for it that the lens actually worked. Likewise we only have your word for it that the buyer doesn't know how to use the lens. It's not exactly compelling evidence is it.

IMO the advice to request the lens be shipped back (properly packaged) and issue a refund is the best way to get out of this situation. if the lens is not in the same condition (or is not the same lens, that happens), then you can file a counter claim with paypal. they side with the buyer in pretty much every case.

I actually have her word in writing that she got the lens to work but it sounds like it might not be working. What kind of evidence is that of a lens not working properly?

Hey Buddy, at this point, it does not seem like you want advice but rather want people here to side with you.

The buyer paid for something that should work consistently...not "got it to work now" and then not work later and hope it works again.

You may be right that she has a buyer remorse, but PayPal will side with her based on the little information you have provided here.

...AND PLEASE DO NOT TELL PAYPAL THAT YOUR ORIGINAL LISTING DID NOT MENTION THAT THE LENS WORK!

It is assumed whatever you sell works unless otherwise noted.
