Sorry you find a Boreal Chickadee, but you definitely made good use of your time on this trip.
These are excellent Matt! :-)

Thanks, Phil! In the dead of winter, I’ll take whatever species I can get!

First photos of the New Year! Took a little trip up to the North Woods of Wisconsin, an area which sees the transition from the deciduous hard woods (your typical maple/oaks/etc), to the spruce/fir of the northern Boreal Forest. My goal/target bird to see was the Boreal Chickadee, but alas I came up empty handed on this trip, as from what I read, they sometimes won't make it as far south in certain years. So, I made the best of it, and got to enjoy an abundance of Red-breasted Nuthatch, a species we get further south, but nowhere near the numbers that I saw this weekend! What made it a little extra special, is that there had recently been some hoar frost, which covered all of the vegetation/branches in sharp, white ice crystals:

Starting to figure out a little better how to get the Z9 to lock-on with eye tracking for BIF photos. I still love the 500PF but I'm starting to see times when something like the 100-400 native Z lens would give me more versatility and with a 1.4 TC would bring me to 560mm on the 100-400 Z lens. Just not sure if I want to give up the incredible sharpness of the 500PF. I may have to get the 100-400 to try and then decide which lens to sell. Here are a couple of recent shots from my backyard.

Awesome, catching a Pileated in flight, You couldn’t ask for a more perfect wing position.

I’m with you, can’t see a reason to part w/ the 500PF. In fact, I’ve had thoughts of re-purchasing a D500 to use with it, just to relive those days of ultimate lightweightedness (not a real word, I know ;) )
