Nothing like the sky & your house reflecting in the eye to kill the eye shot. Lol!

That resolution is nice, stop complaining, Phil :)

AC only seems to fail when it’s hot out, right?

Did you ever use the EOS R? Wondering how Nikons MILC compares to Canon’s offering.

Lol!

Ya know... The branch the Finch is on looks a lot the one your Eastern BB is on in your avatar. :)

Yea, we got luck on the AC this time. The blower motor in one of my air handlers started rattling the other night, so I called it in before it fails. now, I just need the parts to come in before it dies. Interestingly, a blower motor, new turbine blades, ancillary items, & install cost more than a D500. vmad

No, I never got to try an R. They came out just as I sold all my Canon gear. From some of the images, they seem to work quite well.

The Z bodies have incredible IQ and man, can I ever get spoiled with the EVF BUT the AF is not up to par with the D500 yet. It's really nice on static & slow moving (big) birds, but is hit & miss on smaller faster birds.

I have one native Z lens (the 24-70 F4 kit lens) and it's quite nice, but I've used the FTZ adapter on my standard lenses for the most part and they work perfectly. I've done a good bit of reading on the Z bodies & likely future products (roadmap), and the new mount really opens a lot of doors. Many say that despite the current popularity of the Sony's, the one thing that is not talked about much (and is perceived as a shortcoming) is the small lens mount. Here's one interesting article that summarizes the issue and offers comparative designs that is presented in an easily understandable way. https://petapixel.com …ll-frame-leica-exec-says/ (external link)

Sorry, rambling again!

Phil, no time to study the size of lens mounts but I think the Nikon D500/D850 lens mounts are small ??? Well compared to what I remember about
Canon and the Sonys I have now.

I agree & I'm certainly no engineer, but as best I can understand what they are referring too it has to do with the mount diameter vs. the distance from rear lens element to to the sensor.

I see Sony is set to release a couple new long lenses as soon as next week, so they must not see it's as an issue. Could be more Internet infighting between brand loyalists. Who knows.....

PF has arrived, and it’s every bit as small as they say. It makes you chuckle when first unboxing it bc of how tiny it is ;-)a

Here it is next to the 1DX2 + 600 III, and 80D + 100-400 II (at its smallest FL, 100mm):

I’m on kid duty today, so won’t get to take it out on a test run.. it’s so perfect outside too, 75F, no humidity, slight breeze, sunny  So, I’m spending the time (while daughter naps) tackling the absolutely backwards Nikon menu system and button layout.

Nice, I did not realize you got this setup after the new 600mm purchase. You seemed to get one fairly quickly compared to what I have been hearing on FM. Sweet gear. Resist the temptation, resist the temptation  Looks like it is producing some nice images. I wonder about a 800mm PF f5.6, that could be fun?

It's a fairly recent acquisition (within the past two weeks), but I actually first inquired about it (with Ben) back in January when we were still waiting for the 600III's to arrive, after that supposed Dec 23 target date come and went without any word about them. I was so close to pulling the trigger on it, but instead opted to continue waiting for the 600.

I gotta be honest with myself, but this combo could take the place of the 1DX2/600+1.4TC just because it's so light weight, and it gives up hardly any IQ. It won't be able to quite match the big rig in all areas, but I think I've come to the realization that I'm willing to compromise in some areas and gain in others. 750mm vs 840mm, comparable AF agility, and with a decrease in high ISO noise vs. the 1DX2 is what I'm weighing.

This morning I worked it out in heavy overcast to see how it handles the high contrast scenes caused by the low, ugly, flat light.

Very nice, Matt.

Ya know, this reminds me of another observation I've made. It could be residual effects from life in the 70s & 80s, but it felt to me like the Nikon produces better colors (easier) than my previous gear did in the referenced (low, ugly, flat) light conditions.

I only have a week with the new camera, but the few outings I've had with the D500 have totally put to rest my reservations I had about shooting a crop sensor camera in bad lighting. Check out this 100% crop SOOC from the other day, ISO 3200. I'm 100% ok with these results:

Here's a similarly sized crop from the 1DX2, at ISO 6400. There's a clear noise advantage to the FF shot, but the D500 holds its own against Canon's best:

Wow!

That's an excellent comparison. Both are certainly workable.

Thanks for sharing. :)

btw - Glad to hear you like the Hejnar. Hard to beat for the price. Robert turned me on to that one, after I had bought a Kirk. Lol!

It is so soft, and it spreads the weight of the lens out over the hand better than the stock foot, so it feels even lighter now. Good purchase, indeed. Now I'm just waiting on my LensCovers from HugaNature.

Sitting here with the AC fella back in the attic - this time with the parts to complete the repair (I hope!).

Figured I'd go back & look at some of the shots from our visit to FL in April. This one reminded me of Matt's High ISO post above.

It was really dark in this area, hence shutter speed & ISO.

First is SooC.
Second is cleaned up & de-noised.

Definitely some 'blah' light here. ISO 5000, yet completely usable.. I'm confidant that we can pretty much shoot the D500 in whatever condition, and come away with salvageable photos.
