Hopefully going to a bierding venue next week for an opportunity at BIF with the D500+500PF.
So far I'm giving the lens a big thumbs up. Size, sharpness, weight are all winners.
I won't be shooting anything at 1/100 of a second and all the VR in the world won't help my shaky arms, so the concerns over
VR in the Nikon PF lenses means nothing to me---I understand how it means a lot to others=always a compromise in photography eh.
One think that surprised me is the bokeh; in images I've seen from other owners of this lens the bokeh is just awesome.
Seems there is a scramble in many places to find this lens. How I ended up with one I'll never know, but I will say that BestBuy has in the past
provided me with new gears rather quickly.
Lenscoat is ordered for it so they are available now.

Tonight I did micro-focus adjust (or whatever Nikon calls it) on the 300PF+1.7TCii. I'd already done it on the 500PF with the 1.7TCii. I hope to get to play
with that combo for an effective 1250mm in the real world on next weeks trip.....but I can say that it plays well off the bat with the 1.4TCiii.

One more thought. This lens is not for my area.....you've probably heard me whine about 300+ days a year with rain/cloud/snow/fog/crap crap weather. The F5.6 will always be challenged here, but so is my 400DOii at F4. That is just my reality. I cannot carry/wield the F2.8's anymore.
Luckily the D500 does well for a 'cropper' pushing the ISOs a bit and I've discovered the iso invariance of the D500 sensor (must be a Sony sensor inside :)
So we'll just do the best we can with what we've got.

I'm still learning Nikonian speak :)
Here's one from this morning before the Sun had completely cleared the ridge.
The Nikkor 500mm F5.6 PF is not listed in the POTN database yet so I had to set
the lens as unknown.

Just back from 4 days shooting the D500+500PF.
I took the Sony a9 and FE100-400GM but decided to focus completely on the Nikon kit.
We visited the Savannah and Harris Neck NWRs. At Harris Neck Poof (the better-half) walked me
6-8 miles/day and I carried the D500 and 500PF all of those miles and no medical treatment was
required post. I'd consider this lens a winner for that alone.
Weren't easy miles either, over grown trails or open fields with bush-hog stubble and first thing
we see driving into Harris Neck was an eastern Diamondback slithering across the road :)

So why these two NWRs? Because they are close, well 5-6 hours close and I wanted a venue to try
the D500 and 500PF on BIF.

So now I have an idea of the lens on the backyard song birds in crap light and BIF with Herons/Egrets/etc in good light. I think
Nikon has a super winner IF IF IF you have enough light for F5.6 or are tolerant of increase ISO induced
noise. Of course that is body dependent too and I'll say for a cropper the D500 is really good at handling
up to 6400.

Here is an example of the 500PF with the Nikkor 1.4TCiii

Nikon D500
500.0 mm f/5.6
ƒ/9.0 700.0 mm 1/1600 360
ISO Speed - 360
Focal Length (35mm format) - 1050 mm

Adding to the collection for anyone who might be interested in the 500PF and another with the 1.4TCiii.
Have to admit I love 700mm/1050mm effective and can handhold all day. But F5.6 plain and F8 with the 1.4TC
mean Florida or Arizona light needed, though this shot in southern Georgia :)

Here's another Jake.
I'm pleased with the lens.
And I used the 1.4TCiii way more than I thought like
on this one-

Nikon D500
500.0 mm f/5.6
ƒ/8.0 700.0 mm 1/2000 220

Nice shots & great feedback Robert. Thanks for sharing. My best shooting buddy is a long time Nikon guy & protog by trade. I've learned heckuva lot from him. He's been using D500's since they came out (along with various full frames Pro bodies) and almost always uses a D500 when we're out - even when I have to stash my 7DII & go to the 1DxII or 5DIV for lighting reasons.

He had recently suggested a D500 & 500 PF for my wife, simply for weight reasons. It was within a day or two of that recommendation that I saw you had picked up a that same hardware plus the 300 PF.

I went ahead & pulled the trigger on a D500 & one of the (heavier) 200-500 zooms to start with. Both wifey & I are excited. We'll add the PF's as soon as I can sell some of the existing gear.

Keep posting up your Nikon experience! We will join you soon :)

Phil that's great.
I certainly understand the weight issue. I'd recommend for you to consider
for the Mrs. the 300PF + 1.4TCiii.
I think when it is all over and written in stone the 300PF will be the favorite of my
little stint into Nikon land. It is just as sharp as the EOS 300ISii I sold seemingly long ago and
the bokeh belies its F4. A lot can be done at 420 and it takes the TC very well.

I'll be curious to see how she gets along with the 200-500mm. Last week in the refuge I noted
a man using that lens and it was always on a monopod yet it was a bright sunny day...he was
younger than me too.

But Poof and I also shoot Oly M1ii. She has the 300/4Pro and I use the PL100-400. I often get
the shot because of the zoom advantage.

Is there ever a perfect answer!
