Thanks for all of the follow up info. Continuing to collect data for a final decision while I wait on the backorder list.

NF I'm sold on it but don't have a choice. On the trip last off week I carried it for several hours, just couldn't do that with a big white, not even my 400DOii. Carrying it today looking for hawks I'd find myself casually holding the rig with one hand, bellwether for me. Now if Commlite can up their game with the 500PF to what the a9 can do with the 300PF I'll be over the top. In the mean time I'm learning to get along with the D500. I know F5.6 limits the day but it is what it is.

NF gotcha.
OK downsized to 1600 for POTN rules.
I pulled up shadows as much as the D500 would allow.
Yeah I was snippy this morning. My apologies. Critique all you want :)

This one should demo how the lens deals with highlights from behind-

To my eyes, the background highlighting, the unpleasing part, is very similar to what I sometimes see with the Canon f/4 500mm and a 1.4x TC. It seems to pop up on occasion. Throw a 2X on and it's more common. I'm sure distances and busy-ness interacting with light (and maybe IS?) all play parts, as it is not a constant at all, but it sure as heck does happen. I also recall that look from the 100-400mm, which is @ f/5.6 as well. (@400mm)

Jake, are you referring to the Ibis or the Heron.....or both :(

Here's one with the 1.4TCiii

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one of these lenses for momma because it will be nice & light for her.

Can't wait to get it in hand, but it looks like it may be 4 weeks or so. :-/

4 weeks will pass quickly! Soon you'll have it :)

Shame POTN doesn't know this lens yet (database), here's another with the 1.4TCiii.

Phil we're all waiting on something. I'm waiting and waiting for a mini-a9.

Nice BIF shots. It'll be nice to swing that lighter lens. I just received an updated delivery notice for sometime between Nov.8 to 15. Looking forward to it. Though about all I'll have to test it on this time of year will be feeder birds and the family dog.

Some nice looking shots here. I've just had some major back problems re-occur and decided I'd need to shed some weight on my gear. So I made the choice to switch from Canon to Nikon so that I could get access to the 500mm PF and the 300mm PF.

I sold all my Canon gear except my 500mm F4 mkii in the last week and already have my new D500 and D850, along with the 300mm PF and some other lenses but I can't find a copy of the 500 yet. Guess I'll just have to wait for now.

Anyway, I'm pretty impressed with the new bodies but I'll miss my Canon gear as well, had some great times with the equipment but looking forward to new and lighter things.

Jorgac I don't miss the EOS weight at all. And if you read my saga I pre'd the 500PF before owning a Nikon body.
If Sony had anything like the PFs(500 and 300) I'd not be sipping the Nikon juice now. But all is good now.
The a9+Commlite+300PF is practically natve.
The a9+MC11+400DOii is 98% native.
The a9+Commlite+500PF SUCKS! But I have hope for a Commlite firmware update.

I was kinda remiss about having to go back to a DSLR, e.g. the D500, but other than the having to chimp on the LCD
and the loud shutter it's really not that heavy....life could be worse eh :)

NW I know you have gulls in Anchorage? Surely, aren't they everywhere???

I predict this. People coming from 500mm primes, me the EOS 500ISii, you'll get more keepers
with the 500PF. It is a bellwether for photography just because of the swing/acquisition speed.

I think this is a Common Tern

Yep I think I'm good using the 1.4TCiii. This shot with it for 700mm.
I've been trying with the 1.7TCii. I think it has hope but will need a lot of MFA, probably
more than I'm willing to put into it. I think for a 'birder' and a checklist/ID the 1.7TCii will
be fine.....I'm not a birder with a checklist A:)

Not this time of year. Most of the ones that stay for the winter hang out at the city dump along with a couple of dozen eagles. Not sure where I draw the line on what I will/won't shoot but it is somewhere this side of the garbage dump
