This Red-crested Pochard fell into my "trap", which is a little trick I use when possible, being much too lazy for bird hides and such. I simply try to get the low sun in my back and sit very still. That way birds in the water see only my silhouette and get fooled now and then. When they see through my trickery they are usually quickly gone.
Another advantage of this strategy, is that the light is of course fully on the bird, and with the setting or rising sun, that is not a bad thing...

The 500PF by the way, does really well in strong light, a step up for sure from the 400DOII+1.4TC which prefers more gentle light. I am afraid my Canon stuff is gathering dust at the moment.

I understand about gathering dust, but I've been reacquiring a few EOS lenses of late for my Fuji system. They work a charm via the Fringer II adapter, many many of them except the 400DOii if you can believe that :(But my 400/5.6 and the EOS 100400ii work fine.

Caught this little Black-necked grebe with his fiercly red eye, one of a group of two males and a female, by anticipating where they will resurface after a 30s dive. They were very entertaining, diving and resurfacing all three together. We are enjoying a spell of summer like weather after a loooong and dark autumn/winter period.

A stunner.

It still doesn't?!!!
Can you believe that I actually contacted the guy behind the fringer eos to fuji adapter more than half a year ago in my continuing search for a 7DII alternative, asking him if he could support the 400DOII?
His answer: "I don't have that lens, so I cannot support it." That was the end of the fringer option for me.

Yes sir you are cranking them out now!
I'd post my first ever Eastern Phoebe but it was with z50+300PF :(

Don't feel bad, Phoebes are extremely tough even with the most ultimate of gears  Even with the 1DX2 + 600, I couldn't get in the right spot to land a nice Phoebe shot.

I am having better Palm Warbler luck this year though!

And here's a female Eastern Towhee... rare as hens' teeth, this is the first time I've had one in the open!

A first for me, a Blue-winged Teal. I was able to get on my stomach at the waterside, behind some grasses, and they slowly/eventually picked their way closer and closer to me.

Thanks Robert!
I,ve seen several flocks of 20-30 birds lately, heading north. If you can find them at a berry tree, like these were, they stick around to eat for awhile.Used the car as a blind.

Thanks Matt!
Starting to see some migrants trickling in,meadowlarks, shrikes, sparrows,a few flycatchers, and a few warblers.Problem is they follow the north side of lake Ontario for awhile before dispersing north, and all the parks, and good spots are closed due to covid-19.So it,s a waiting game,to try to intercept them further north, later this month!
I,m just driving back roads, scouting right now!
