So I have an older 27" Imac, late 2009 with 4 card slots. When running elements 16's selection tool the program keeps crashing usually when I am in higher magnification and moving the image around. I upped the ram from 8 meg to 16 but it really hasn't made a difference.
All I can think of doing is working at a much slower pace when I'm brushing around the selection. The image I am trying to work with is from a 6D high res jpeg but it doesn't seem to make it worse when I am working on Raw files from my 5D4.
Any suggestions on setting that will help?

The most frequent advice I see in these situations is reset photoshop and turn off the graphics card acceleration.

To reset photoshop preferences, hold down the Cmd+Option+Shift keys while starting photoshop.

Maybe Elements works similarly.

elements wants 64 bit:

The scratch disk is the physical drive that the application uses to read/write in place of RAM for large memory operations. You can usually configure this in your preferences (again, I’m using photoshop as a reference, I do not use elements).

Typically the scratch disk is the internal startup drive. If you are running low on space or Ps is misconfigured, you could have problems. Although, with all that ram it is less likely the case.

So I get a message "Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor has quit unexpectedly, click reopen.......... and then it goes on to say if I want to report this. Does it make a difference where I have pulled the image from? The image is loaded onto an external backup drive.

Yes click report, copy it, no need to Send To Apple.
