All the advice is good... particularly getting low with young players. Makes a big difference.

The one nit I will pick here is don't let anyone tell you that you should delete any of your photos. If you like them, perfect. If its a picture of the back side of your friends kid scampering down the field - and it brings back memories of the game, its a good shot. Not every shot for a personal collection needs to be a "for sale" image or a wanna-be Sports Illustrated shot. If your not shooting for anyone else other than yourself, keep what ever makes you happy. There is an over obsession on technically correct images, that often tell you absolutely nothing about a game.

Covering a game professionally is also another task completely. Peak action shots are perfectly fine... it is the nirvana of the game. But covering a game also means you have lots of b-roll shots. Line men coming out of their stance. This is particularly with little dude football. There aren't going to be a lot of really good action shots to be had. The competition just isn't that good. Maybe a half dozen opportunities in a game. You can't cover 100% of the field also. So spend time getting those story telling shots. Kids emotions. Coaches doing their thing. Parents reacting. Mini cheerleaders if they are there. Players on the sidelines not paying attention. It all paints the fuller story than a few peak action shots.

The ideal shot. Yep, face (emotion & eyes), get low, have the action clearly defined, all that mess. Want to make other parents happy... their kid, in focus, doing their thing... even if it was secondary to the main action. Centers need loving too.....

EDIT: BYW, in a lot of these shots you have the lens lower than eye level of the kid... so good on that.

EDIT 2: some of these just need to be cropped in tighter... like 0H6A9149. Good youth shot.... just crop all the extra space out of it.

I agree. My shots don't all have balls in them because I give all the players some love - offensive and defensive lineman, kickers, field goal holder, punters, coaches, players on the sideline and even the refs. I try and get everyone of them because the images are for sale and you don't know what a parent or player likes. You'd be amazed at what image parents buy, so I include action and non action shots. However, I do get rid of backside shots, unless it was something unique - like a player diving for a TD with the ball stretched out with player's number clearly visible.

If I only shot those with the ball, it would only include running backs, QBs and receivers.

I may not be a football fan, but I can appreciate a well taken action shot. This photo is very nicely done.

Hey man, I started this thread and I say they are all keepers!! This was not intended to be a criticize/critique thread, it's a "show us your football shots" thread. Just as I stated in the OP, it's also for all levels of football.

Awesome! How do you like the 7DII? I see you are still shooting with the 1D even when you have the light for the 7DII. I've been reading up on the 7D II and the only thing I read that I like is the 10 FPS. After dealing with my 2 original 7Ds, I'm a little leery of the ISO.

Thanks for posting.

If it were Sunday, there would be 2 flags. Helmet to helmet and going low on the QB (if that is the QB).

Man, I am loving my new 6D....

I know that @ 250 ISO in bright sun should produce these results, but my 7Ds would really add a lot of noise when I brought up the shadows created by bright, overhead sun. Not to mention how the great DR of the 6D gives me less "shadow" to have to recover in the first place. Other than the slowish FPS, this isn't a bad sports camera as I have read in many reviews while researching this body.

This is the legend, Mel Blount.

There cannot be less shadow with one camera over another, the DR gain by the 6D over older cameras is really in the dark areas being able to be pulled up without alot of extra false electronic noise. :)

Great capture!

I wish I could say this guy made the catch, but it was just out of his reach.

Thanks for clearing that up. I shot the 6D and one 7D during the same day and the 7D just seemed to have deeper shadows. Maybe the difference lies in the metering systems.

I love going onto the field way before the game. There is always someone interesting around & I love the background the empty seats give me.
