Cause you to spend money. I've never seen any thing like that. It looks like a flag, but the underside looks reflective. I can't think of a reason to reflect light under the hood, unless you really want lens flare?

Looks like it is held on with hook and loop...could it be mounted wrong way around?! :p

Or maybe, when the subject is backlit, the white side is used to reflect light so shadows are opened?! :p

Definitely intended to lighten the wallet.

Although follicle-challenged people like me might appreciate keeping their cap on their head rather than using it to shield a bulbous front element from the sun. Lenses like the Tokina 16-28 are prone to flare when the sun rakes across the front element. I often can't prevent the flare without having my hand or cap in the frame.

This thing was designed to do two things; it does both of them well.

1.) Make money for the designer/marketer/seller.
2.) Make the purchaser look 'uninformed'.

Same category as all the other flash attachments/tupperware/trash out there.

It looks like a bounce card intended to be mounted to the back of a flash.

I just figured it was made to stop flares but that's what the hood is for so I was confused.

Why would anyone make something Just to get the money of eager, unsuspecting and naive customers? :-)

It's an adjustable, universal flag that is used to block light from striking the lens.

I have one and it works well for the type of long-exposure photography I do, because it's often not possible to hold a hat in exactly the correct place for 60 seconds or longer.

This is especially true when it's necessary to position the flag just outside the frame to block stray light from, say, a streetlight, striking the glass and causing flare.

Unlike the typical lens hood / shade, one size generally fits all lenses and it can be adjusted to block the light only where it's necessary.

This is very useful for me, because I frequently use rise / fall movements for my photos and often on't want to restrict the size of the image circle the lens projects by mounting a hood on the front of it.

I have to admit I am wrong, it is a 'shade'. The name on the product says so!

Looks suspiciously like this

https://www.amazon.com …fRID=3NXJFRDV4QFD0WF5R43G (external link)

but its name (seen in OP photo) seems to indicate otherwise

It's this one, also found on Amazon...

Yep, another unneeded piece of gear marketed for the uninformed GAS-aholics. I use my hat whenever I need a little extra my hoods don't provide. Even with long exposures. ;)

That actually makes sense.
