These points you make are big for me as well. I've had a discounted version of photoshop 5.1 for years now, but I'm actively moving away from adobe, to the point that I even suffer through gimp once in awhile just so I am at least used to it. I will not pay for certain software if I cannot install it locally. I know for some, the cloud is the trend, but it's really only a control oriented money making gimmick.

I think we will start seeing even more competition in the near future. Affinity Photo is impressive. There are a few different versions of gimp, with gimp by itself being around for awhile now. Plus, the open source image manipulation libraries keep improving, which makes it easier to develop new applications.

In case you are not aware, Photoshop and/or Lightroom (current versions) do install locally on your PC. It is simply that on a regular basis the PC needs to connect to the internet to get validation from Adobe that your tithing has been paid, or else the program goes into 'crippled' mode (limited things it will do for you) until paid.

If you choose monthly payments then it needs to connect to the net at least once a month. 3 months if you get the annual plan.

While I'm generally online most of the time, there will be that one time that I'll need the software and cannot get online to validate, and my head will explode. I'm moving away from subscription software as much as possible.

PERFECT!!!! I am sold on LR

I'm thinking that every application I've used has this feature in one way or another. Sometimes it comes in the form of a macro and you need to record steps.

Are you planning on spending more than a month in the jungles of Borneo? :-) it only needs to communicate monthly to make sure you are still using it. If you don't use cloud storage it shouldn't matter. You can use it without an internet connection and when you get back in contact you can sync to the cloud if you want to. If you have a concern pay for the year. I did because I don't want to be reminded every month.

Lol, no. Just my luck coupled with my distaste for software-as-a-service.

You aren't the only one. Many have the same distaste. I'm was not and still not thrilled about it. I would have preferred perpetual. I always upgraded to every new release exceopt when PS went CC a few years ago so I concluded it didn't make much difference. I checked my purchase history with Adobe and it showed that.

I tried the top ones out last fall which included C1 Pro and DXO and LR still was best for my needs. The thing that pushed mover the fence was not having to use the cloud if I didn't want to. That was a big one and I would not have signed up if I had too.

Actually it will go 28 days past the end of the last paid period if you have no internet connection. So it could conceivably go 56 days by my reckoning. Oh and even in the crippled mode you can still import new images, apply all of your required metadata. The Library module also has a Quick Edit section which allows you to apply a preset to the image, although you don't seem to be able to apply multiple presets, adding a second one seems to reset you to the defaults first. You can though adjust most of the basic panel settings, as well as hit the Auto button, which seems very good these days with the new Sensei system. One thing that is removed is the Edit in right click menu, so you would need to create an export to do the same thing.

I've been messing with my Paint shop pro 2019 program.
It has a batch edit area and I can add a watermark, delet exit info, resize....many different options.
Also has a search bar to find specific photos but I will need to work out a system for it to work well.
Who knew! Lol

It seems pretty basic and I'm sure it's not as good as LR

But you can install both LR (Classic) and Photoshop locally and there is zero requirement to put anything in the cloud. All your files/images live on your desktop.

For those who do want to use the cloud there is Lightroom CC/Mobile, which is designed to run on phones and tablets that don't have enough storage to store all your RAW etc locally. However it is an option... not a requirement.

That is one of the top misunderstood things about CC and to no fault of the general public. The world cloud is enough to put the brakes on. Happened to me so I wasn't interested but after a little research learned it how all worked. I have read how poorly Adobe named it but I don't think any name would have made a difference. LR7 which is now used as a short cut. I can see it now - "LR7 - is that stand alone? Why not, LR6 is? What a stupid confusing name." :-) It is also a term than can be easily exploited to steer people away.
