I see great reviews. I'm wanting a little more reach than a 70-200mm and I definitely want an f2.8 so would you recommend this lens?

I have no specific subject I shoot but will be doing kid soccer games and dance recitals I'm sure

I had one for 2 years or so....excellent IQ, good AF but not lightning quick, very heavy and the manual focus ring was not particularly easy to use however if you can live with those few shortcomings the lens is really good value for money when compared to other f2.8 300mm versions. I'll troll through my older photos and post some examples asap.

Two cropped examples of this lens used with the (earlier version) Sigma 1.4 TC. My photos were generally of distant static subjects and I did find the 300mm limit to be short for birding but it may well suit you better. Hopefully these will give you some idea of IQ.

I've used one for the last few years, though I'm now selling mine as I have acquired a Sigma 150-600 Sport. An excellent lens though, probably to expensive to ship from the UK

i use the sport version of the lens...no complaints at all...it's pretty much my most used lens...a lot of times i use a 2X with it for the birds, and bare for sports/low-light stuff

I bought one about 5 years ago. Initially I was impressed with it. But very soon became despondent with it. It's AF is fast but very inaccurate. Over and undershooting randomly. Optically it was quite sharp, but not so good with teleconverters. I found it rather large and heavy for what it offers and it's very short of the 300mm claimed focal length. It also suffers from focal length breathing as the focus draws near to Min focus distance. At around MFD the focal length is closer to 240mm than 300mm. So at MFD it's not much better than a good 70-200 f2.8 in terms of reach. I A/B it with a Canon 400mm f2.8 LIS (mk1) which just blew it away in every aspect. So I sold the Sigma a week later and few other bits and purchased a used 400mm f2.8 LIS which I still own and enjoy. It was the last Sigma lens I've bought after a long potted history with Sigma lenses

It's a heavy beast works best without TC but ,a 1.4 TC is the limit if you don't want to loose to much IQ
But since i shoot with the Sigma 150-600 sport it collects dust.

exact same experience. I felt mine was soft at F2.8 as well
