Wow, was just reading this review and mechanical teardown of the Canon 70-200 F2.8L III.

Glad I did.

I was holding off until some more reviews came in. Was hovering over the 'buy now' button for a few hours yesterday. I know it's only a $300 difference in price but this article does raise the spectacle that perhaps it's just a repaint on the old model now 8 years old. What the article did not clarify was whether the electronics are different at all. They show that the mechanicals are the same and aside the new lens coating not much else was found.

Should be interesting as more info comes in. My interest in waiting a month it to see if there are any flaws in the new lens that have not shown yet, electronic, etc.

Canon has said it's a refresh, and indications are that the main difference is lens coating and cosmetic changes. The optics and IS are the same as the II. I don't see the need to upgrade my 2.8 IS II (never have had issues with lens flare).

•The III has ASC (Air Sphere Coating) in addition to Super Spectra Coating, designed to reduce flare and ghosting.

•The III has fluorine coating on the front and rear lens elements, keeping them cleaner and making them much easier to clean.

•The III has Canon's newer, whiter paint color, matching the other recently-introduced telephoto lenses.

•The III has minor typographical changes including the words "Image Stabilizer" and "Ultrasonic" printed below the focal length range and next to the focus distance window. The gold "Image Stabilizer" has been removed from the mount area.
