I'm not convinced EF performance will be as good on the R as on traditional DSLRs. Until that is true we will continue to see DSLRs updated on a regular schedule.

How long were Canon film cameras produced after the first DSLR?

it's the $64k question that has everyone wondering, or at least it should if you are invested in Canon gear. I figure i'm good as is for at least a couple of year without any equipment upgrades

I'm considering selling the 5D4 and 7D2 for a 1DX II. With the changes coming I'n not sure what to do. It could be years before they release a ML 1DX but I would hate it of it happened within a year.. I can see myself with the IDX II and a ML for other stuff.

I understand. it'll be interesting to see how well the new 400 and 600 sell with the uncertainty

Canon has time to look at sales figures and decide. From what I've seen of the rumored specs of the R, it may not have a significant difference in sensor features as the 5D4 (which I've just bought). I'll be happy with the 5D4 for a few years, and I'm used to the interface of DSLR. The 5D series has always been popular with wedding photographers and portrait artists: photographers who just need image quality instead of the speed of the 1D series. I believe there will still be a market for the 5D series for at least a few more years.

I do too but since the 5d refresh won't be for a couple of years I think there is a question of whether it will be mirrorless or DSLR. Canon seems pretty high on their "sexy solution", the EF adapter and there appears to be three of them. if performance does not take a hit adapting EF to R the DSLR could be dead in a couple of years.

Of the rumors, I think Canon's main advantage with their mirrorless might be the new lenses. Nikon's Z cameras seem to be met with lukewarm reactions from Nikon shooters, and I saw Tony Northrup bemoan the fact that lenses for it are going to be slow to release. Because of their lens legacy, and continued sales, I think it might be more then a couple years before DSLR production ceases.

For all of the benefits that a mirrorless camera can bring the user (no blanking of viewfinder, silent shutter operation, etc.), I still feel that the inherent viewfinder lag caused simply by the refresh frame rate of the display is an obstacle to certain uses of the camera.

Even at fast 120 fps update rate of the current fast viewfinder LED/LCD, trying to track something moving at 90 mph (a baseball, or a race car) means that in 1/120 sec. the object being tracked will have moved 13.2" beyond, by the time it shows up at its most recent position in the viewfinder frame.

Yes, a flipping mirror does contribute to shutter lag, but at least you are seeing the object being tracked at its true position, and not mis-aimed.

Dead is a bit strong, dontchathink? Then again, maybe not. The P&S market died with the smartphone camera. The upside of that has been relatively HUMONGOUS sensors in teeny-tiny little P&S cameras. Will the DSLR die, or evolve? I don't see a direction, yet.

Even if the DSLR dies relatively quickly, I'll be using them for a bit longer. My film cameras are 30+ years old. By the time my 80D is 30 years old, I'll be too old to give a hoot about much of anything.

it seems like if they were killing off the EF mount, why come out with the 70-200f4ISII, and 70-200f2.8ISIII...just wait a few months, and then when everyone is complaining about there not being a nice R mount long lens, boom...drop those on them of course not II, and III versions, but just R versions

the fact that they are still introducing lenses, especially ones that already have great lenses that they are replacing gives me hope that all my lenses are not totally useless now :)

Almost true. You've never seen any moving object where it actually is at any point in time. That is not even possible; light takes time to travel any distance. What you actually see is where the baseball was about 0.0000001 seconds ago. A 100 mph fastball (baseball) viewed from 100 feet away (assuming perpendicular to direction of travel), will travel about 5/10,000 of a millimeter in the time it takes light to get from the ball to your eye. For most of us, keeping that slight error in the viewfinder should not be much of a problem, most days. :)
