This is the very middle of a weed that has gone to seed. Heavy crop. I've not really seen anything quite like this before. Nature never ceases to amaze.

Part of a much larger array under a date palm. The dark area at left is in the shadow of a frond swaying high above.

Dates, continued: recently fallen stem, if that's what it's called (probably not).

Thanks. They're very small, 1.5 cm or so. I'll take one to measure when I pass by again. You can estimate the amount of edible tissue by comparing the pits in the close-up with the whole dates. I suppose they interest squirrels and possibly birds. The date with an exposed, powdery interior looks to have hosted the larva(e) of a seed eater.

I passed by today and brought home five. They're bigger than I thought, or, rather, a centimeter is smaller.

The one on the right shows the thin edible layer between skin and pit.

They certainly look skin and pip. Not exactly inviting looking.

Here we get Californian dates ". Huge meaty things, scrumptious, but mega bucks :-(
Alternative are wizened up dried things from Iran or somewhere over that way.

These tiny dates might be worthwhile for small animals, although I didn't see anything going after them. Palms are planted here as ornamentals. This tree seemed more a nuisance than a blessing, with so much dropped fruit to clean up or leave on the lawn (which was all weedy grasses anyway).
