Maybe here lies the problem. Panasonic and their tiny sensors are mopping up in the video department. I suppose Fuji as well. Sony is the only full frame with good video, and there are suggestions of heat issues. Maybe Canikon is trying to avoid heat issues, while Sony sort of overlooks them.

RED video cameras don't even have full frame sensors.

The R is kinda like what I was expecting from Canon's first mirrorless FF camera just a bit Meh but still at least they have stepped up on the cart. Hopefully the next one won't be as crippled.

Neutral to underwhelmed at the moment. I believe Canon could and should have been more aggressive, but I don't think it's bad. That said, I think the price might be a bit high compared to the cameras it's coming out against.

I think they've made some good design decisions with the new platform although I'm disappointed I will likely never be able to use an RF lens on an EF-M body, if I eventually go that path.

I'm curious how the sensor stacks up to the 5D Mark IV, as far as I'm concerned they need to be doing more here than they have been, or that it looks like they're doing now. At the price point I can excuse the single SD slot, but I want to see Canon start introducing IBIS and I want to see them focus on making their sensors more competitive regarding dynamic range and shadow recovery.

Time will tell, it's extremely unlikely I'd trade my 5D Mark IV in for this. In 2-3 years, if Canon tries a bit harder and their lens lineup is going the right direction, I might say otherwise regarding a future model. I've wanted to upgrade my 17-40 4L to the 16-35 4L IS, so for RF I'd love to even see something like a 14-30 4L IS. At the same time, my 70-200 2.8L is 18 years old and unstabilized so I've been considering upgrading to a 2.8L IS II. I'd rather get the mirrorless equivalent when the time comes, if I'm on or moving to that platform. The 24-105 looks good, that's one of my mainstay lenses now, although I hope this one moves the needle on performance more than the II did versus the first gen I have.

Regardless, in presumably at least 2-3 years my next camera is probably either a mirrorless Canon, or I have to go through the hassle of changing to something else or relying on adapters to use Sony or something. They've dragged their feet long enough, I may finally move on.

I still need to see how the EVFs are though, I haven't been super in love with any I've tried to date, but I've not tried the latest crop.

That's not so bad for an EVF camera. A 1.7x crop sensor can give very good video. The next step up for top-quality video would be a sensor with the 7680 pixel width of an 8k video, properly downsampled 50% to 4K, and that would be a 39.3MP 3:2 sensor.

Maybe a next generation will be 39.3 or more MP and the bandwidth to downsample, but for now, cropped 4K is preferable, IMO, because it has a lot less artifacts than using the whole sensor width of a 30MP sensor.

True downsamples of 50% (39.3MP), 33.33% (88.5MP), etc give the best possible video quality, but they require lots of math and data movement.

Personally, I don't want full-sensor-width 4K in the direction that FF pixel counts are heading unless the sensor is 39.3MP and it is properly downsampled.

Video "dlog" is not directly related to what we usually refer to a DR.

Canon has never provided DR values a la DxO or PDR, AFAIK. Just a lot of poetry, like Canon's official lie that the 5D2 ushered in a new era of DR, when the 5D2 had unpushable, banded shadows.

How's the image quality (in terms of artefacts) on the FF cameras that do full frame 4K video; e.g. the 42MP Sony a7R III?

I.e. are the benefits of being able to record 4k video from the whole sensor outweighed by the downsampling artefacts (vs taking a 1:1 crop from a smaller area of the sensor)?

You can also customize pretty much any button, including the new touch multi-function. And the filter adapter is compatible with EF/EF-S lenses. Speaking of EF-S, it becomes a crop when used.

It would be nice to keep FF with some EF-S lenses. Their image circles can be much larger than assumed. How many times have you wanted to rotate an image and found that you had to crop to do it? Using FF mode would give so much more re-composition potential in software.

I like all of this stuff right here in the thread that is mostly about camera bodies. These gear threads would be much less enjoyable if every part of every post was strictly on topic ...... that would suck. Yes, it would.

CIPA rating doesnt do Mirrorless any favors, but it is the standard.

You can expect 700-1000 images based on how you conserve. Unlike DSLRS, you have to actively conserve battery with mirrorless.

That’s 12 stops within a 10bit compressed video file. CLog is not camera RAW.

My little drone does 12.5 stops at 10 bit dlog

It’s because it’s a song sensor tho
