The problem is that while it doesn't have a "blackout" it fills the refresh period from the sensor with the shot you've just taken. So, while you're looking at mostly static subjects that's fine, but tracking an erratically moving subject with that is impossible. You'll need vastly faster sensor readout for this which can be achieved like in the Sony A9 at the expense of sensor performance at everything but base ISO or via a smaller sensor or partial readout like in the Fuji X-T3.

X-T3:
  • 30fps with electronic shutter in crop mode (1.25x)
  • 20fps with electronic shutter in APS-C
  • 11fps with mechanical shutter

A9:
  • 20fps with electronic shutter
  • 5fps with mechanical shutter

20fps is pretty darn smooth, 30fps is smooth. Everything below 10fps is very hard for tracking erratic movements, better to have 20fps or more.

So, if fast or erratically moving subjects are your thing, the EOS R maybe isn't. And that doesn't even account for AF.

What you see between frames as the camera shoots is a jedi mind trick (which seems to have worked). Instead of black, they show you a recorded image. In order to have no blackout, the hardware needs to be of a much higher caliber, basically the sensor has to be able to dump the entire contents off instantly and be ready to record (and thus display) real-life. Today, the Sony A9 has that, but it is a $3K + camera. It will take a while for the technology to catch up with the low end cameras.

Now you've said that I can see that is how it's done, never even thought about the whole thing before it was brought up here. I've long since given up trying to make a serious wildlife camera out of it, but I know, because of the good stuff about it, that it is the way go in the future.

Hi folks. Had a chance to hold and play with this today with 24-105 at Best Buy. Should have brought a memory card with me, but...

Build quality seemed superb to me. And I have have a 1D X and 6D right now and 5Dxxx'x in the past. But funny, I could not get consistent focus. Either with back button or half press. Baffled me. I figure a setting amiss somewhere as it could not be like that when properly set up.

A "duh" moment occurred thinking about the adapters. I loved the idea of an adapter that can accept C-Pol or ND but then realized that that is only for EF lenses! I'd still need for R lenses when and if.

The EVF bothered me a little. First time, so maybe that will go away with use. Just felt out of place.

And agree, the Sony A7iii is just too short. Bothered my grip. EOS R felt much better in my large hands.

Just a few random thoughts...

There will be other adapters by Christmas, for other lenses. They might be out already in some markets.

Hi folks. Are there any issues found on this camera when focusing on horizontal lines?
(I had some discussion in the past about technical restrictions, because of Dual-Sensor technology)

Has anybody seen if the grip has the slider control? My bet would be that's going to bring some patent issues into the equation if it does. I doubt it does, but it's an important control that will be virtually unusable in a vertical configuration without a copy on the grip. I just can't visualize whether it would work on the grip not having seen the actual camera yet. It will be interesting to see how this will be handled.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but I'm sure the usual suspects are right around the corner, unless there are patent issues here holding them back, but it does make you wonder. New technology. ;)

This is sad, and I'd never considered it either. I just tried to see if any of the RF lenses already include the drop in filter slot in the lens themselves, but I could not find anything to indicate that.

You usually have to wait about 6 months for 3rd party grips to show up.

I know nothing real about lens design, but the ability to use an EF - R adapter with drop in filter is allowed because the original EF lens was made for longer back focus distances.

If they were to design a native R lens to allow for drop in filters it would defeat the gains of having a short back focus distance ... technically, the lens would require a longer BF distance.

The EF lenses with built in filters are all long lenses, right? Telephotos are the lenses that least benefit from short BF distance, right?

RF teles might have drop ins, but I doubt they forego the normal/wide short BF lens design benefits to add a drop in.*

probably not as not even the original $500 grip has the touch pad.

Awesome

Dennis this is something I really wanted to see so thanks for posting.

How fast/slow was the AF when you had everything hooked up. Your thought about TC performance ?? Lastly is this a straight off nothing done file and how heavy was your crop. Looks pretty good. I ask for people that might be considering for wildlife needs. Yeah thats one big Arse bird :p

This is more general to DSLR's and any old mirrorless camera than the EOS R, I found it informative anyway, I only had a vague idea of how AF in a DSLR worked, nice explanation of what's going on and why MFA is sometimes required.
