Agreed, and anybody that disses it (ie. says it is a bad camera) is either on an agenda, is ignorant of the camera and its capabilities, or probably should indulge in some other hobby.

Lol. Or, they’ve stepped out of the comfort zone, & actually tried something better. What other mid 2017 release camera, comes with a single, yes single, through the finder, cross type AF point?

It will be interesting when Canon announced their APS-C R mirrorless, that will effectively mark the end of the EOS-M, I would think. I cannot see how the continuation of the M mount with the RF line makes any kind of business sense at all, especially given the decline of camera sales. Maintaining and expanding 4 different lens mounts seems a bit silly.

That’s a comforting thought, for all those invested in M cameras. What happens if EOS R doesn’t perform sales wise, as expected? Will they just turn their back on that too?

Well i dont think they went with Eos M for the extensive lens lineup. Seems like most M users really dont need exchangable lenses.

That would be good. My only question would be whether the camera will force an APS-C crop when used with an EF-S lens. Maybe you'll get the full frame image with third-party crop lenses. I've tested Sigma's 18-35 on a 5D3 and the image circle, whilst not covering the full frame, certainly looked bigger to me than APS-C.

I suspect it will not let you be in FF mode with EF-S. I think it’s Canon’s way of mimicking Nikon, which has let you put DX lenses on FX cameras (and they go into crop mode). But I think it’s interesting that the article I read said the R also supports Super 35 crop

Well I, for one, would be very disappointed if the auto cropping couldn't be overridden. I regularly use Sigma's 18-35mm on my 6D for astro, particularly for stitched panoramas.

Here's an example...

Many only shot center point... Name that better camera for $400 again? Oh there isn't one is there? ;) And the DR matching Sony A series to boot...

Is this a canon camera we are talking about?
Then why dont the big dslrs have the same DR as sony?

It's an 18-35mm f/1.8 Art which is an EF-S lens. It works on full frame at 35mm with a fairly heavy vignette, most of which can be corrected in post.

Holy cow -- he says most of the shots were done with a 24-105.

If that's the case... the kit lens might be enough to convince me to get an EOS R.

(I'll still wait for more reviews and lens comparisons, of course :-))

I am curious how 3rd party lenses will work like my Tamron and Zeiss Milvus. But the EOS R images look so good thus far, I think I would switch over entirely to native Canon glass if this is where the RF mount bodies and glass are headed. That is - switch over entirely if 3rd party become an issue.

I think Dave's point is that being 3rd party, it's more likely the mount is EF (while the diameter is sized more for APS). AFAIK, the difference between the back of the EF-S and EF is physical...the adapter will switch to crop if it's physically activated by an EF-S mount.

It's actually pretty amazing how Canon's sensor performance has jumped with the current generation cameras (5D4's DR going up 2 stops from 5D3 at base ISO, and having similar DR as Nikon D810/D850 at the same ISO).

If an 18-35mm is made for an EF-S mount body, the lens is an EF-S mount lens and can be called such, even using a figure of speech. There are over 200 figures of speech and some are more precise than regular words. If they were not using a figure of speech, what you shared may help them looking up lens model information.

Well, all I’ll say, is that there are FAR better options available, if you’re not married to Canon

Which option is better than 200d for the price that inlcudes articulating touchscreen and dpaf and excellent out of camera jpegs without any need to postprocess (great for beginners)? And factor in access to cheap and good lenses to boot.
