What I am most curious about is sensor performance. There have been some mentions about not so good shadow recovery.
I'm sure most are assuming the sensor is equal or better to 5D4, maybe not.

I don't ever do video so don't care about 4K, single card is fine now I know both RAW and JPEG save to the same SD card ( card failures are so rare, plus it's a hobby not a job). Everything else sounds good, especially getting away from micro adjusting lenses. Let's be honest, shutters, mirrors, they just sound archaic these days, they're on their way out so getting on at the EOS R ground floor makes sense to me... I bought a brand new 5D from B&H for $1,800 in May of 2008. No rebate and not a refurb and not a gray market one, either. The 5D Mark 2 wasn't released until October of 2008. I think that somehow you haven't kept really good track of all the price changes over the years and the corresponding rates of depreciation for each Canon body. Maybe it's just not super important to you, and therefore you don't remember all of the dates and prices with great precision. I’m not sure how you bought a new 5D for $1800. I bought mine with a rebate for$3000. Your assertion was that Canon cameras have significant price drops after 18 months. In the case of the 5D series (excluding mark 2). I’ve just seen the price go from $3400 to $3000. The only time I’ve seen significant drops are when the successor comes out. The 6D2 has dropped in price, and that’s probably so it can compete with other brands. Canon 5D mk IV

Would we be comparing it to that of the best of all features of every previous canon film camera? Are we expecting too much from this new format, new technology (yes, its new...still)? Aren't we glad Canon is going mirror less? Camera's: 70D, G12 | Len's: 18-135mm IS STM, 55-250mm IS STM, 50mm f/1.8 II | Photos:flickr

That makes a huge difference, because Canon bodies, including the 5D series, used to depreciate quickly. I bought mine new for $1800 in May of 2008. I have no doubt that if I'd bought it a year earlier, it would have been significantly more expensive. By 2013, one could buy a used 5Dc for just $500 if one shopped around a bit, as any responsible buyer would do. So just 7 years after release, the 5Dc dropped from over $3,000 to just $500. So just 1/6 of the original price after only 7 years. I really wish that the recent bodies would drop at the same rate. Anybody that says the 5Dc didn't drop quickly should go back into the archives of Fred Miranda's classifieds and eBay's Completed Items history. The facts are quite different than what people seem to remember. Ebay and Fred Miranda are not reflective of what prices were through authorized resellers (prices can be cheaper because of grey market and used prices). And it's a given that used camera gear depreciates (especially when 2 generations behind). I bought my $3000 5D during April of 2007. Looking up the 5D, it was introduced on August of 2015 (so 18 months later, the price hadn't dropped quickly). Granted I wasn't checking prices after. But when I bought the 5D3, I did continue to watch prices, and never saw it drop below $3000 (until the 5D4 was introduced). I'm sure you'll see a similar depreciation of the 5D3 whenever the successor to the 5D4 comes out. Canon 5D mk IV

Thanks for that info. That completely explains why I got mine for so much less - I purchased mine roughly 10 months after you purchased yours. I had really wanted one for quite some time, but refused to buy one until the price dropped drastically. Now I use Canon Pricewatch for getting deals (my 5D4 and grip were cheaper then the regular advertised price for just the 5D4 body). Canon 5D mk IV

I've never bought anything through them (yet), but it's a really good site to use to keep up on the current market prices. It lets you know the REAL price that you can get new gear for, not the inflated prices that authorized dealers are required to advertise/sell at. Aren't we glad Canon is going mirror less? The first DSLRs were Kodak digital backs put on Canon or Nikon film SLRs. It was noteworthy when Canon decided to break ties with Kodak and make their own digital DSLR...but digital shooters were already used to DSLRs. The technology was reducing in price and getting better, so you also had more people starting to switch from film. Many features were the same as film bodies with the exception of having LCD screen to preview images (and the 1D had the same form factor as gripped EOS 1V). Canon 5D mk IV

I've used it a few times now for lenses and the 5D4 with grip. Once you supply your address and accept their price, they let you know what authorized dealer it's from. One time it was one of the big NYC dealers, and they called me for credit card info. This time it was a Canadian dealer, who had the deal on a webpage...so I could just add it to a cart and pay with Paypal. Even though it was coming from Canada, delivery was pretty quick.
