Though always uncommon, I have seen more Canada Warblers this fall than normal. Direct sunlight and the perfect angle of reflection turned its normally dull, blue-gray back into a strikingly vivid hue. Blue in birds is a structural color based on the reflection of light by the micro-structure of the barbules in its feathers; it is not a pigment. So the viewing angle can make all the difference.
