Will Canon keep supporting EF lenses into the future or will they transition to the newer mount?

I'd say the simultaneous announcement of the 600 f4 and 400 2.8 version 3 lenses (announced with the EOS R..) answers your question.

As long as DSLR's are around Canon will continue to support EF lenses.

That said, if Canon wants to build out the RF portfolio as aggressively as Sony built out the FE portfolio, EF lenses are going to have to take a back seat. Perhaps not to the extent that the Sony A-mount did, but I don't think we'll see as many EF lenses being released going forward.

Not really a big deal since the EF lens portfolio is already very robust

Not totally true. Canon has dropped support for several lenses already, most notorious is the 200 L. Can't get it fixed, period.

Eventually, yes, support will go away. Older lenses first - I imaging the original 300 L 2.8s are nearing if not already. Doesn't mean they aren't good glass. And other brands do so as well. I have an older Sigma 120-300 2.8 that is broken, and Sigma will not fix it any more. The one thing Sigma did offer was for me to recycle it with them, and they would give me a significant credit for it.

But for now... I see no reason to avoid EF mount lenses. It is going to be a long time before they end of life the line. They will have had to have dropped the EF mount bodies way in advance of the support for the lenses to go away.

One has to assume that almost all of the current limitations of EVL (compared to what dSLR can do) are overcome sufficient to make EVL true replacement.
At present, the EVL seems to complement the dSLR...each has its strengths/advantages, and is 'the best choice' in a given set of circumstances.

Supporting? Yes for a very long time.
Manufacturing? Yes for a shorter amount of time, probably 8-10 years

You would have to see a mass exodus to mirrorless by Canon across the Rebel line, and even the 1D series line to no longer manufacture EF lenses.

"Into the future" is quite vague.

Yes, Canon will support EF lenses into the future. I would think that "How far into the future?" would be a more pertinent question.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

More pertinent, but no closer to an answer because nobody here knows the answer. :)

X = Canon announces a mirrorless version for the final holdout of a DSLR (whether the rebel line, 7D, 5D, or 1D series)
Y = Canon makes their last EF lens
Z = Canon stops supporting EF lenses

Y = X - 1
Z = Y + 10

So Z = X + 9

As an algebraic guesstimate... :D

Canon support/service for that model was discontinued many, many years ago.

EVIL sounds even worse!

I had never heard of "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens"? What is it? When was it made?

I think he meant EVIL: Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens, aka. MILC (mirrorless interchangeable lens camera), or mirrorless as we have been calling them.

EDIT: Never mind replies made as I slowly typed things up. :)

I'm with Tom on this. It all depends on your definition of future. 1 year? Then I think its safe to say yes, 100%. 5 years? Less than 100. 10 years? 25 years? Getting less each year.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I have been there and done that many times... typing too slow...

The EVIL or MILC lenses you refer to, is that the new RF lenses?
