I need to upgrade my ancient MacBook and transfer the completely purchased, no-monthly fee version of Lightroom (v5.7) to the new computer. Can it be done? Will it have to be done on a mac, or can it be done on a PC? Obviously, not a tech guy here.

All of my photos are catalogued on Lightroom. I want to keep it that way. If it were possible to purchase a new version of Lightroom (or Photoshop) outright, I would. I don't shoot enough photos to warrant buying monthly service. Thanks for all advice.

If you have got the original DVD just install Lr on your new computer from that.
To move your catalogue to the new computer, copy the Lr backup files to an external storage device and then attach that to the new computer. Then navigate to the latest backup and open it up.

You can install Lightroom on multiple computers. I think legally the license is for 2 machines but I don't think LR5 checks anyway so....

1. Install on new machine from CD. If you don't have the CD you can download the install files from https://helpx.adobe.com …/lightroom-downloads.html (external link) (just scroll down to where it says LR5)
2. Launch it and enter serial number (it will create a new blank catalog)
3. Copy your real catalog file (default name is lightroom.lrcat) to the new machine.
3. If you have any user created Presets you will need to copy those too.
4. Copy your original image/RAW files to the new machine using the same folder structure.
5. Launch LR. If it defaults to the empty catalog use File > Open Catlog and navigate to the proper catalog.

Adobe still sell the stand alone version of Lightroom 6 but if V5 does what you need you may as well just stick with it.
