Thinking of switching from 80d to 7d Mll. I am an avid bird in flight photographer and like the 7d Mll with 10 fps, 65 focus points, dual card slots and weather seal. The 80d has 7fps 45 and no weather seal. Would really like a 1dx but that is out of my paygrade, was ready to pull trigger on a used 1d MlV at around $1000 but for $300 more I can get a new 7d with up to date system and the controls seem to work same as my 80d and 6d Mll. Really like the 80d but do not see any downside to an older camera. Any thoughts.

I traded my 70D for a 7Dii earlier this year. I also wanted the improved AF system, in my case for airshows. So far I’m thrilled with the switch. No regrets.

The one big advantage of the 80D is the touch screen as well that it flips out. But 10fps is hard to beat at the price.

80D has the better sensor, less noise, more D.R.
80D also has some AF advantages, more AF points when T-cons are mounted.

That said, I love my 7D2 for birding!

great shot, as I said I like the 10fps vs 7fps but you have to get on the bird initially or all else is moot

I have no experience with the 80D but looking at a bunch of ISO 6400 in the 7D2, I find the performance disappointing. Almost par with my 60D... I'd hope of something better...:-(

I have a 7D2 and took the 80D for a test run. A few things like FPS, etc were discussed. I preferred the 80D's sensor over the 7D2 but that was not enough to motivate me to make a move. The 80D has this silky look to it. That is the way I describe it which is not very technical.

Having shot with the 18Mpx variants, I find the 7D2 to be quite noticeably better with high ISO. The noise is more distributed and even, and easier to clean with better retention of details. The choice of raw converter and post processing tools make a pretty big difference as well.

Not much needed to clean up the images IMO. The 80D is a bit worse at higher ISOs, but has better DR at low ISOs, like 400 and lower. I don't have back to back files I can compare, but at the end is a snapshot of the DPreview comparison tool using the low light option and using the "shrink all images to the same size" function.

I never tried the 80D at a higher ISO. This is from the other day and these birds are fast. The 7D2 snapped in even with a 1.4 III attached.

Friend of mine traded his 80D in for a 7dmk2 because of the iso quality the 7Dmk2 handles the iso's more controlled seen the pics and can conform his experiences.
I moved over from the 7D mk2 to the 1DX still use the 7D mk2 because of the crop sensor lenses (sigma 18-35 1.8 art, sigma 8-16 mm and the 50-150 mm os hsm II(unique lens)

I have the 7DII (and 70D) I only use the centre point for AF for my action shots, never tracking where the AF points skip around. Love the 7DII.
Some owners use other AF points for tracking and like the results. I experimented briefly and did not like the camera making those decisions.

I would suggest keeping your 80D and be patient. Hone your tracking skills whatever your AF preference. See what the 7D3 brings.

For shooting with the LCD screen 80d > 7DII; for action, high framerate shooting 7DII > 80d, IMO. I love my 7DII and don't hesitate to shoot up to 6400 at all and will willingly shoot above that if the shot requires it to capture properly. Just be sure you're nailing your exposure or shooting a bit to the right and drop your chroma noise before attempting to remove overall noise with a light hand.

Being able to customize your case, and the other AF adjustments available on the 7DII makes it a no brainer for BIF and such, to me.

Just purchased a new 7D Mk II with some birthday money that came my way. Just picked it up yesterday so have not had a chance to get out with it yet but looking forward to it. I have/had a original 7D and T3i and was sort of debating between the 80D and the 7D Mk II.

Blue Angles are coming to town this Spring. I use to haul the kids to air shows all the time. This will be the first one in a few years. What shutter speed do you use when shooting? Do you pan or try to "hit" a point in the sky?
