With Air Tahiti, the hand baggage allowance is the same whatever your destination is.
So you can take with you, free of charge, baggage within the following limits:

1 hand baggage by passenger
Maximum dimensions: 45 x 35 x 20 cm (17 x 13 x 7 in)
Weight: 5 kg (11 lb)

Trying to figure out what size bag would best fit this and what I can take. Talk about a restriction. (planning a future trip)

Wow, good luck with that!

I was thinking the Think Tank Airport Essentials since it's a nice smallish backpack but that is 18 x 11.5 x 7 and 1.6kg. You'd go over weight bringing all the gear that you could fit in the bag plus the bag is an inch too tall (which you can some times get away with that)

Maybe a small sling bag or shoulder bag?

Do you have any bags right now that are close to those dimensions?

Try looking at Lowepro bags...my Stealth Reporter 100AW with two Lowepro lens cases mounted to its exterior measures about 11 lbs. and it is about 20"W x 8"H x 8"D. Remove one of the external mount lens cases (and hang it from your belt instead) and the bag with one external lens case is only about 14-15"W

Unfortunately Lowepro revamped its bags and lens cases a number of years ago, so I cannot suggest a model line or model number

Thanks,

I'll check it out. Might just be one of those things I go down to best buy and pick a small bag.

Check https://travel-made-simple.com/carry-on-size-chart/ (external link) for the specific airlines you might be using and their size/weight limitations.

On LowePro choices, I recommend you visit the LowePro "bagfinder" at https://bagfinder.lowepro.com/lp/choose-profile (external link). You can (virtually) input your equipment and the tool offers LowePro choices that will work. Even if you don't finally buy LowePro the tool will give you a feeling for physical size to do the job.

What are you wanting to take? What are you planning on shooting? Maybe try and work out what gear you want as a minimum and find a bag to suit?

I went to the USA last week and had a similar dilemma about bag choice, although I had more space and weight to play with. I was looking at a messenger style bag like the Tenba DNA 15 Slim (external link). This bag fits your dimensions.

I ended up taking my Lowepro Stealth Reporter 400 to carry my gear on the flight and a normal daysack and lens pouches to carry my gear around the city.

It all depends on what gear you are bringing. A bag along can weigh between 2-4lbs. That leaves you with 9-7lbs of gear. A Canon 5D4 and 24-70 f2.8L II is already about 5lbs. Add another 1-2 lenses and you're maxed out. You'll probably be able to fit more if you have a mirrorless.

Without a list of what gear your plan on bringing or own, only you can decide what bag to get.

Glass :: RF 15-35 f2.8L IS | RF 24-70 f/2.8L IS | RF 70-200 f/2.8L IS | RF 35mm f/1.8

I checked out the Tenba bags and ended up with the Tenba DNA 15 for an upcoming trip. It's amazing and will work as my "personal item" on the airplanes. Saw it in a store but ordered it from B&H because the color I like just happens to be on super sale (maybe that color is being discontinued or something).

I think most camera bags will exceed those requirements. If I were to travel on that airline, I'd carry my Timbuk2 messenger bag with the Snoop insert. At least it would provide padding and can be configured to fit a little gear.

Regional flights for me to France the last couple of years have similar tight allowances, I ended up buying a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250 but probably could have got the 350. Managed to fit in a couple of bodies and a handful of lenses, batteries chargers a change of clothes, tripod, cleaning kit for me and the camera, MacBook pro etc...

Of course you can always wear a jacket with a few pockets that are a little on the big side to hide lenses in and have a camera round your neck, that what I use to do when I was lugging about the bigger cameras, not such a big deal with the Fuji though. They never said anything and it kept the bag under the weight but I've never been asked to weigh it as it looks small. Bon chance.

Big pockets--hadn't thought of that!

To paraphrase Mae West, "Is that a long lens in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

I would say yes Fuji has the best IQ to size/weight performance with the X series lineup.

The airline restrictions from tahiti->smaller island are really tight. Just trying to figure my options.
