Personal attacks violate our rules and serve no productive purpose.

Stop.

Re-read the rules and focus on the topic at hand.

Elements isn't a bad idea. It would provide me with the latest/later version of ACR while the pared-back PS would probably be enough for my limited needs.

Do you know if you can install Elements alongside CS5? If that's possible, I might find the (presumably) less hardware-hungry version would allow me to eke out another year or two from my iMac.

I do not believe the Elements ACR is the same as ACR in Photoshop.

I believe you are correct. In the past I bought Elements & LR for the full version of ACR. This might have changed???

I once had Elements and the full version of PS installed on the same computer. I think it's still possible to do that.

It is a full version of the engine, in that it can correctly render images edited in the full version of ACR. What you get is a version of ACR that has had certain tools removed from the interface, so you have no access to them. Since ACR saves it's edit information in a plain text .xmp sidecar file, it is possible to go into the .xmp file and edit it by hand to include instructions for the full version tools, which the Elements versions of ACR will correctly render.

I remember that when Adobe introduced the paintable Spot removal tool one of the members of POTN did some work on adding those brush strokes to .xmp files. It is also why you can add extensions that will allow you to apply dehaze to images in Lr6, since the render engine was the same as for the then Lr CC (now Lr CCC), with just the new tools removed from the "older" version of the program.

I switched to Affinity Photo and haven't looked back. I still use Lightroom, but Adobe lost me as a longtime customer when they started their monthly fees. Affinity is a little different from Photoshop, but contains almost all of its features. There are plenty of how to tutorials online for free.

Is GIMP still around? Is it any good, I've never used it?

GIMP is alive, well and capable. I have way too many years of PS skills to be happy using it, but would likely achieve about the same results.

I still use Photoshop CS3. I used to subscribe to Adobe CC when I was taking classes (student price is $29.99/month). Now I need a job and can't afford it.

However, just an FYI - it is incredibly hard to install an old version of Photoshop after having CC. They don't want you to do it obviously. I had to re-image my hard drive to get all of the little Adobe files off everywhere so it would let me install the old one.

I was just "forced" to buy PS Elements 2018. Bought a new laptop so I need the software. I was about to subscribe to PS when I thought it was $10 a month then realized that was for LR only, to get photo shop it was $20. I love LR but need PS much more. IMHO I think $240 a year is a bit steep for most people. I've had 2 earlier versions of PS Elements and they were all I needed. I can do a lot with the Elements/LR combination & feel the only people that truly need the full blown version are graphic designers & artists. If you need the full version for what you do, I'm not sure you can classify yourself as strictly a "photographer".

I thought that LR + PS was still $10/month.
