Spotted this lovely critter a few days ago in the pond behind my place.
He/she made a catch, a fish, but pics of the strike were way too blurry.

This one demonstrates to me that I really need to start trying out
various focusing screens and going back to ensuring the screen is
fine-tuned to the camera, as focus is really quite a bit off.
A shame, really, because I definitely like the water reflection.

It's certainly a challenge to use long vintage lenses on a crop-sensor camera! ;-)a

This guy looks more like a Great Egret rather than a Snowy.

Greats have a longer neck and are quite a bit bigger than the Snowys. The Snowys also have yellow feet......but you can't see this guy's.

Thanks for the detail.
Would that make this one a Great White?
I always assumed the all-white ones were Snowys, but I've never been a birder.

He/she showed up again today.
I managed better focus, but CA at wide open surely shows thru this lens.

No, that is a Great Egret, which is a species all its own. A Snowy Egret is more slender and has a thinner, black bill.

The so-called "Great White Heron" is a white morph (plumage version) of the Great Blue Heron found only in the Florida Keys.

Your second picture is a Great Egret as well.

Here is a Snowy. Smaller with a shorter neck and the yellow feet.

In the OP you mention using "long vintage lenses). Not sure what you call "long" but assuming it was longer than 50mm you may want to consider that the difference in sharpness between the two shots may have something to do with shutter speed, 1/40s in the first and 1/1250s in the second.
