Hi,

I have a couple of the Lace 2big thunderbolt 1 Lacie RAIDS. (3x2 TB, 4x2 TB).

I was trying to find out if the newer versions of the Seagate Barracuda drives would work in these enclosures. Lacie never updated their compatible drive lists and still show the older version. I understand Seagate had upgraded the line originally used by Lacie (and others)

The original part is Barracuda st3000dm001 and the updated version is st3000dm008. I want to buy new drives for mine and I cannot get confirmation that the newer version will work properly.

Thanks.

(Buying a couple new drives is much less expensive than buying a full new Lacie RAID and I want to keep the same form factor since I don't want two different looking RAIDS, that would drive me nuts).

Is this info more current? I see it is copyright 2018, not that means much.

After having 2 failures of the 3tb drives (1st after 1 year of use, second about 6 months later), I researched and found there was a common reliability problem that didn't occur with the 4tb versions, so I updated both to the latest 4tb and have had no issue since.

yes, I am aware of the issues with the first version of that 3 tb drive. There was a big law suite over it. I could not find from Lacie if the box will function with the newer version of the drive, or if I can just put the 4 TB drives in the case that currently has two 3 tb drives. My 4 TB version is a a few years newer but still the Thunderbolt 1. type.

I am considering just buying two 4 tb drives and giving it a try. I have an external TWO drive dock that takes any drive and connects via USB, so I can use the two new drives for backup either way, if it does not work in the Lacie enclosure.

I rebuild my 3 TB RAID last night. But first deleted all the redundant files leaving just my SPARCE Bundle drive for my mac backup intact. The rebuild too several hours. The first time I did a rebuild I left the 3 tb drive full and it took DAYS! LOL. That was with my prior older iMac of course but it is still painfully slow.

I read were some tried to replace ONE drive with a larger drive, restore the RAID to it and then replaced the first drive with the same larger size and thus increased the RAID size without loosing the data. My SPARCE bundle is 1.5 TB for mac Time Machine backup. I have same on my 4 TB drive. Time Machine comes in handy once in a while. My backup scheme is VERY redundant. LOL.

Every time I create a SPARCE BUNDLE I have to go back to the web to research how to do it. Not something you do often enough to get all the nuances committed to memory.

Oh well, a seldom used hobby needs some bumps in the road. some day........

Yes, that was my source. Not sure why they don't have a quick blurb about "The newer version of the Barracuda will or will not function" The must be aware of the update!

I did download a document from Lacie at the time that said the new drive, both 3 and 4tb versions would work in my 2 drive enclosure. Can't seem to find it now. It was in the late part of last year.
